The fact that those areas are so heavily Muslim I find surprising as well, considering there is no obvious connection with the heavy Catholic influence around it
----------------------------------------------------------------------
the fact you clearly know nuffin' about the Ottoman Empire and it's extent and influence in SE Europe, makes most of your views on Kosovo null n void young man
Know your history before passing judgements
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wow look at you getting so tetchy all of a sudden. It's just a discussion, act your age old man.

Also the Ottoman empire was more than just those few countries. Yet Greece, Bulgaria etc are mainly Catholic.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
greece and bulgaria are orthodox countries
I think the main reason for converting were due to Ottomans levied heavy taxes on the non muslims. Probably other benefits for converting to muslim

decades of communism no doubt secularised the population
the balkans are a v interesting region
it's on the fracture point of east and west europe..caused when the roman empire split in 2.
the western roman empire = latin script + catholic Christianity ie Croats
the eastern roman empire = Greek script (which became Cyrillic) + orthodox Christianity ie Serbs
throw in the influence the ottomans had in the region, and you begin to understand the ethnic tensions there

More than Kosovo?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No idea about Kosovo, but you’ll be hard pressed to find a practicing Muslim from Albania.
I’m really keen to read up about the history of Yugoslavia, the break up of it and also the life of Tito who the Slavs seemed to love.
Was pretty sure I read something or saw a documentary recentlly about the presence of ethnic Turks in the European part of the Empire and their role in the administration and goverment of those territories.
Only had a quick look, but found a first reference in Wikipedia:
"A million or more Turks had settled in the Balkans, typically in smaller urban centers where they were garrison troops, civil servants, and craftsmen and merchants. There were also important communities of Jewish and Greek merchants. The Turks and Jews were not to be found in the countryside, so there was a very sharp social differentiation between the cities and their surrounding region in terms of language, religion and ethnicity."
Quite sure this was a pattern too in modern-day Bulgaria, Romania etc.

It's very interesting in and of itself, but the roots of all the conflicts, claims and grievances go far back in history.
IOAG those who converted to Muslim the Ottomans classified them as Turks. There were a lot of Kosovans and Albanians that held key positions in the Ottoman Empire. During the 5 centuries of occupation, over 20 Ottoman’’s prime ministers were of Albanians and Kosovan origin.
Are they Sunnis or Shias in the balkans?
I think I remember you saying you are Shia, Arab?
I think there are more Sunnis than Shia’s, who are only a small minority in there. Albanians aren’t that religious anyway, whereas Kosovar Albanian do practice it.

Yeah I am, Balkan countries with Muslims are mostly Sunni I think but Azerbaijan is a Shia dominated country. Although I don’t think they are part of the Balkans.
azerbaijan is a caucaus country not balkan
they are a turkified iranic people..iranic by ethnic origin, turkic by language
incidently during the match last night...the russians in the crowd ofcourse supported the serbs, and chanted serbia-russia and kosovo is serbian
russian and serbia are v closely allied
russia sees itself as the defender of all orthodox slavic nations, and serbia as the leader of the southern slavs
