Messi is an empty jersey. Disgraceful performance and should be nowhere near the conversation of the greatest ever players if that is the sort of no-show performance he can be bothered to give in a world cup his team needed him to show up and inspire. Couldn't be bothered at all, just walked around the pitch aimlessly taking a touch before passing sideways for 90 minutes.

Ridiculously OTT

Messi can literally only get the ball when he goes deep, then gets marked out the game. Other teammates should appreciate the extra space and step up, yet not one good passing player meant that I think that must be a WC record for failed dribbles.

Is it? Only caught bits of tonight's 2nd half and it was basically all Croatia, but in the first game you could see he just couldn't cope with the pressure.

Ronaldos superhuman display against Spain destroyed Messi's psyche, his id was gone at that moment.
Now he is lost in limbo, between Hubris & Ennui

The Swiss CB and the Japanese winger?
Had Ronaldo played that match instead of him I don’t think he would have done much more - maybe won a few headers.
What I will criticise Messi for is the team is clearly picked to suit him whereas Dybala should always be starting and Messi should never be a 10 (I think he is quite a poor 10)
Problem is the striker as well. Aguero is so lazy nowadays and doesn’t contribute much unless he’s scoring - which he struggles to do in tournaments for Argentina. He doesn’t seem to work as well with Messi as Higgy does either. But then Higgy is too fat to play a high intensive style.
Icardi, Dybala and Di Maria is probably the best fit for a Sampaoli team.
He’s an attacking manager, but his style obviously doesn’t suit the main attackers in this Argentina squad.
It’s take a brave man to ditch Higuain, Aguero and Messi at a world cup.

I don't think Aguero has ever really done anything for Argentina and Higuain has question marks too obviously. Why wasn't Di Maria playing anyway? He can't be worse than the guys that played today
I was serious.
Ronaldo hasn't broken him now.
He's gradually worn him down mentally over the years.
Messi just can't keep up with Ronaldo's obsessiveness, and it looks like he might finally have given up.
Dunno he was poor in the first game and got dropped. But he was no worse than Meza and would have offered more down that left hand side.
messi looked in a trance for most of that match
he was so useless...anyone else would have been subbed

i actually thought higuain gave them a little more of a threat in attack
but really what a mess of a team
Messi is still grate but has lost that spark he had a few years ago, especially on the big occasion. And given his insistence to always be on the ball it’s making him easier to defend against.
Ronaldo has lost that spark he used to have on the ball. As an all round player he’s not on the level he was six years ago, but he’s accepted it and adapted his game to get on the end of things and it makes it easier for him to rise to the big occasion in a way Messi hasn’t been able to for a few years.
Ronaldo still cares more quite clearly. A lot of that is due to his self obsession to be the best but bloody hell fair play to still be doing this at his age. That drive is clearly what separates him from the rest right now.

as both players got older, Messi probably thought he had 'won' the battle between them and mentally eased off but Ronaldo just worked harder and harder and is surpass him now.

Ronaldo clearly isn't the better footballer in terms of talent, but he's shown a psychopathic level of desire that's hard to match.

Ronaldo has certainly stepped up a notch in terms of the big occasion. His post 30 stats are ridiculous.
The mad thing is, I think most thought that age would effect Ronaldo far more than it would Messi given the difference in skill level and reliance on speed. But it's been the opposite.
messi just doesnt move much anymore...waits for the ball (by which time he has 3 men on him)
Yeh it’s genuinely really surprising.
I am shocked at how bad a 10 Messi is as well. RW and False 9 he is exceptional but a way off that as a 10.

Naingollan looks like going to Inter. They could be getting Dembele, Di Maria and that Malcom lad from Bordeaux as well. Could have a pretty good team next season.
