he will never live that down
That, the ball bursting, Ronaldo screaming at the ref for VAR are all great highlights
France will find it a hard to break down Uruguay. If Brazil and Belgium go through, I reckon this game will be fascinating to watch.
Kanes third and Neur's fack up were also good

Brazil-Belgium would be a great game if they both went for it, but it wouldn't surprise me if the Belgians just shrank back into their shells.

I literally don't think they can do that as Martinez hasn't set up the team to do so.
Firstly their starting XI in his eyes (he is usually stubborn to any tactical change based on the opp)
Hazard Lukaku Mertens
Carrasco KDB Witsel Muiner
----Verts Kompany Alderweirled
Verts, KDB & Munier all miss the next round if they get a yellow. The replacements would be Januzaj or whatever as the 'wing backs'.
I literally don't think its possible to set up a team negatively with that lineup.
will be interesting to see if spain do abandon the parody version of tiki taka
it should be noted for those of you too young to remember spain pre 2008....that Spain traditionally have been a team that ball hogs a bit and overplays at times...even the clemente spain of 1992-1998 ball played more than most...but he allied that with defensive cover, physical strength and at times more direct play

It's not always about the setup though. You'd like to think it's the ultimate occasion for players like Hazard or KDB to shine, but the pressure of the occasion in a World Cup is so often such that even players of their calibre freeze.

Oh right, yeh I guess so.
KDB looks lost in a midfield 2.
I do actually think given the success of the Madrid clubs in Europe in recent seasons a style of play based more on the defensive solidity of atleti and counter attacking of r Madrid would have worked much better
saul and koke in CM for example

...and a complete and utter lack of bottle.
That's always been our biggest failing. You see it nowadays in teams like Peru or Colombia, who you feel could do so much better if they were able to rise to the occasion.
It's extremely rare to hit upon a generation of players capable of withstanding the pressure and rising above the tag of perennial bottlers.
Doing well at youth levels was one of the keys for Spain to succeed at senior level. I have a feeling it might just be the case too for England in 4 or 8 years' time.
Ball dominance does not equate to tiki taka though.
I agree, peks. We've been horribly slow to adapt. Don't think it's a coincidence that Piqué and Busquets were two of our worst performers in Russia.
Hopefully more LaLiga sides will take encouragement in what we've seen here and play Barça with a bit ess respect next season. They'll still have a lot of great players, but they have obvious weakness that could be exploited better domestically.
I agree spain did used to bottle it big time in major tourneys before '08 (and look to be back to their old ways unfortunately)
hierro was like a rabbit caught in headlights...don't think he made good decisions in or during matches, but I attach no blame to him
he has v limited managerial experience and to have had the spain job given to him a day before the WC started was utter lunacy

v true
passing for the sake of it, as spain did yesterday, is parody tiki taka
Also only just noticed yesterday that Celades was on the bench. Presumably he's one of the assistant coaches, which amazes me. He was uch a car crash for our youth teams that I'd have been in a good mind to rescind his bloody passport, let alone let him anywhere near the senior side!
Would be interesting to see how Spain would've done trying to play like a RM model:
Rodrigo/Asensio Costa Isco
Thiago Iniesta
Saul
Back 5
spain don't have the players anymore to play tiki taka
look at man city under guardiola the 1st season he was in charge...without the right players..it's not effective
Asensio hugging the right wing line yesterday almost had me in tears. He was totally and utterly lost until the subs allowed him to drift infield a bit. He isn't a natural winger, ffs. He's effective playing there when his team has space to break, that's it - and even then, it's on the left side where you'd want to have him. Surely you don't have to be a genius to see that.
I don’t think you can describe Pep’s City side as Tika Taka, they are more direct under him than with Barca.
Peps City side is predominantly wing-play now. Even the likes of Silva/KDB are at their most creative from playing out-wide to coming in IMO.
