The kneejerk 'political correctness has gone mad' people never seem to pick up on the importance of context.
If a bunch of mates are mimicking each other's accents, there's likely to be no powerful / powerless subtext to it.
When Steve McLaren did a Dutch accent in an interview it was obviously an eccentricity and he wasn't imposing his behaviour on a subordinate.
If someone in a position of power or social superiority starts taking the mick of the origins of a subordinate, who happens to be in a minority group that suffers discrimination, there's a very different vibe.
It's the same principle that distinguishes between chatting up a woman and Harvey Weinstein trying the same thing on with a woman whose career he can make or break. What's the power relationship?

Is this even a question of nuance that only the culturally sophisticated can grasp? My kids picked it up early enough without my help. If you're in a position of privilege and behave in a way that asserts that privilege, especially if you're also in a position of individual power, you're being a ****. It's not a complicated concept. Failing to grasp it isn't about mental capacity. It's about unwillingness to think about it or imagine a situation from a different viewpoint. It's telling that in these threads the 'PC gone mad' crowd have never (to my memory) engaged with this point, which is raised every time.

The world has moved on and we live in a far more tolerant society than in years gone by - we shouldn't forget that.
Still work to be done, mind.

By the same token, the fact that we read so much about cases like this one in the UK is more a reflection of just how concerned their people are about racism, at least much more than of how many racists there are.
I do think the UK has made a lot of mistakes in its fight against racism, but so's every country.
If only there was the same degree of sensitivity to these issues in Spain (which doesn't mean there's nothing here to learn on the issue either).
Impersonating an accent isnt racist.
