We don't need to cover every single nation state to have had such laws in the last 1000 years, nor do we need to list every country that currently has such laws, we were discussing a current news item, stop shutting such conversations down, it's ridiculous

Is that what they call whataboutery?

That's true and no one is denying freedom of speech but the timing you chose to mention or air certain views in relation to the matter at hand at an opportunistic moment then it becomes absolute whataboutery.

It's ever been the same.

I remember a few years back Israelis were shooting kids in the knees through a fence, and we were discussing it.

Tbab became very irate and demanded that whenever we discuss Israel we also mention Iran (not that they were shooting kids)

Of course whenever we do discuss Iran or Islamism, he never brings up Israel, so I'm a little confused.

Whilst it's far too early to state with any certainty, he's probably right.

"Counter-terrorism on its own won’t remove an entrenched threat," he said. "We need some boots on the ground. Naturally our preference is for the boots to be local but that will not always be possible."

Been away for 48 hours and return to see that our conversation on current events in the US was derailed as usual

Current events are reasonable to discuss IN ISOLATION, if Texas passes a Draconian law on abortion AND pays people 10k to snitch on their neighbours then that's worth discussing,

We don't need to cover every single nation state to have had such laws in the last 1000 years, nor do we need to list every country that currently has such laws, we were discussing a current news item, stop shutting such conversations down, it's ridiculous.

If America brings in a backwards law I will criticise it, and I'll do the same in isolation if Sweden do it,

If Israel seizes land in Gaza forcibly I WILL discuss it in isolation, and if Norway decides to do the same I'll discuss it.

If the EU makes stupid changes to laws I'll discuss it, and chances are the same people saying "You just hate America" won't pipe up with similar scenarios globally that also need to be added at the bottom as an addendum.

Let people discuss the news ffs, its literally the purpose here.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And others are free to voice their opinions also Insert. If I want to say x, y and z then I will. I’m not telling anyone that they cannot discuss a,b and c so I don’t see what your problem is. You’re advocating for free speech but trying to deny the same right to others?

Doesn’t make sense mate
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's not like I'm saying "You can't discuss Scandinavia"

But you and Tbab were literally saying "Stop discussing America"

What I'm saying is, that it's ridiculous to weigh in with commentary on current events with shiiiiiit like "Why aren't you criticising Ireland and Scandinavia" when talking about a change of the law in Texas ffs.

Then claiming people have an obsessive hatred of one country because we are talking about the news ffs

----------------------------------------------------------------------
We literally weren’t though, were we? Stop exaggerating and misrepresenting what was said, you’re wasting time in doing so.

The conversation started about the somewhat ridiculous new law. Then it went on to subsiding of the pill etc and it was said that it was ridiculous how a developed country such as the US didn’t offer the pill for free. When actually several other developed countries don’t, including Spain and half of the Scandinavian countries.

It’s fine for people to bemoan the US’s position on free contraceptive pills but it is also fine to point out that several other countries with much more of a socialised outlook and approach also do not offer it for free.

My personal favourite hot take was when someone said that free condoms is too expensive and we should just enforce sterilisation instead

posted on 6/9/21

Why point out something that isn't in question, isn't disputed and wasn't mentioned because it wasn't relevant at the time. The US should subsidise or offer the pill for free. That was the point and so should other countries. The fact that they don't us not relevant to the notion that the US should do so. If you take that opportunity to say other countries don't do it then its all fine, no? Otherwise why mention it at that time as if its in dispute?

If I say Afghanistan don't respect women and you say but look at all these other countries that don't respect women, why aren't you talking about them?. What's the use of that? Is it to say its OK for Afghanistan to disrespect women because others don't?

Fact is the intention is to dissuade him from continuing his line of thought but his point is so strong that it cannot be directly challenged without making yourself look ridiculous so the whataboutery is all that's left in the arsenal to obfuscate and dilute the point. We all agree the countries should do it as well. Pointing out the US doesn't isn't to suggest others should or shouldn't.

Finally, most scandinavian countries will be more worried about falling birth rates as opposed to promoting the pill. Just because they're also developed doesn't mean you can draw a line across it and suggest they should be in the same boat as the states. Circumstances are different. The US has record numbers of abortions and this together with other reasons therefore means they should have more motivation and impetus to promote contraception and the pill.

If you just constantly attack America or Israel, and do not address China or Iran etc too, then eyebrows are raised.

You are either for human rights and justice and liberalism and freedom everywhere, or you have a biased agenda and political gripe.

I have called out what America and Israel do, alongside the Islamist regimes and China etc.

Folk who focus solely on Israel in that region need to broaden their horizons, imo.

Folks who obsess all day everyday about America, while the rest of the world is falling apart, also need to research and read more.

We can do better.

Those boots should not be from outside Afghanistan,, and certainly not British or American.

Been there done that, they don't like us lol

Let the Arab league, Pakistan, UN, EU or Afghans fix it, or accept the Taliban have taken over easily, and so there must be a reason for that reality.

We might not like Islamist rule, but it is not our call.

What have I said or done that suggests otherwise? If there's nothing and you're just pointing it out then its whataboutery.

If I talk about the states am I then supposed to mention every country In the world afterwards to convince you that I'm not biased?

If I talk about Afghanistan should I always then mention Iran and Iraq and other stans to convince you Im not biased.

Every post on Ja606 should now have headers, footers and footnotes just so people know you're not biased. At this rate no one will ever make a post on here again. You can't cover everything in one post and if you don't then you're biased.

Would you say we focus on Iran and China as much as America or Israel?

Here, in the news and social media generally.

If you condemn human rights and govt of Israel,, but fail to call out neighbouring regimes, what is going on?

You can understand why Jewish people see a pattern sometimes.

If we mainly attack Liverpool fc here and not other teams, reds fans would raise eyebrows, and right so.

If we only talk about muslim extremism, and not other fundamentalism or extremism, eyebrows will be raised.

If i talk about sectarianism, but fail to call out the uvf or bigots on the orange side, and blame the ra or RC Church alone, or everyday, eyebrows will rise.

You know this, as do insert, Henry, grouchy etc,,but I am patient and will explain again.😊

When I talk about Corbyn, I always got what about Tories, or Boris or May, because people want to hear what they agree with, and I am guilty of this too, but I also know that politics and life, are not confined to a few areas of the world that a few wish to concentrate on daily.

That does not mean I say don't talk about Israel or America, or conservatives or evangicals or abortion.

Fill your boots, as I often concur.

Not quite how the conversation evolved though was it?

The idea that the US should subsidise the pill wasn't pulled out of thin air, it was because I was asserting that banning abortion without offering another alternative was ridiculous, and that if you want to tackle abortion rates then you treat the cause, not just outlaw it with no clauses for Rape and incest.

Nothing at all to do with any other country, unless they too have just announced a six week law, with snoopers bounties.

So yes, it was whataboutery.
