Russia is ranked 126th of 165 countries worldwide on the Cato Institute' Freedom Index below the likes of Nicaragua, Mali, Uganda, Rwanda and Cambodia.

https://www.cato.org/human-freedom-index/2021

It is ranked 125th for corruption by Transparency International, around and about the likes of Azerbaijan and Laos.

https://www.transparency.org/en/cpi/2021

Russia is an authoritarian dictatorship without freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, media freedom, any pretence of an independent judiciary, or any measure of equality.

Let's please not pretend that it is in any way comparable to any given Western nation in terms of freedoms.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But I wasn't comparing it to Western nations, comparing it to Ukraine.

To play silly games, the first link is US. Can't think why they'd be biased...

Again, I'm not suggesting Russia is free in the sense western Europe is, but neither is Ukraine.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Again, as I’ve said to peks, pick literally any given international human rights or corruption monitoring NGO based anywhere in the world and read what they have to say about Russia. Any single one.

It isn’t a matter of bias. It’s cold, hard facts about a brutal authoritarian regime led by a monomaniac dictator.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And again, I'm not suggesting comparing to Europe.

The freedom index gives 7.13 as an average.
Russia is at 6.23, bad right? 👍
Ukraine is at 6.86. Also bad.

https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/freedom-index-by-country
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Now just to play that forward. What’s next for Russia? Is it Lithuania? Finland? Latvia? Well they’re both right up there on what you shared, should NATO step in there?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Lithuania and Latvia are members if NATO.
Apples and cannonballs comparison.

Was just reading that both Finland and Sweden have signed agreements with NATO that allow those countries to request assistance from NATO when under "threats of national security".

While it is true that the US put in place this current Ukrainian government that is anti-Russian and has tried to encircle Russia it was the policies of the Kiev government that created this conflict by unnecessarily discriminating against Russian speakers. If the Russian minority - one that wasn't even ethnically conscious but certainly is so now - had been left alone there wouldn't be a conflict.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
More nonsense.

“encircle Russia”

6% of Russia’s total land border is with NATO countries.

Have a look around the North Pole.

There is a debate to be had whether Russian money infiltrated the Brexit campaign and helped to divide Europe in readiness for something like today.

(And no, that’s it an anti right wing thing as I’m sure plenty of people on the right didn’t want Brexit).
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't think there is that much of a debate. Russian money is supporting anything that causes division in the West. They were organising BLM marches and whatever the counter thing was on the same days, through fake Facebook accounts.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Jeeeze

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why is my name on that, but none of what I posted?

Putin isn't mad , he's planned this for a long time

he's got all his bases covered

built up a huge reserve of gold to fund war,

not bothered about western sanctions, because the west has lost its economic power now....china, his mate, is now were the trading is to be done

this is a geopolitical shift of epic proportions

is this where the west loses its pre-eminence , and the shift of power moves east to china-russia
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Russia is of little interest to China, strategically or economically.

There’s one superpower in the East, and they’ll bin off Russia when it suits them, which may be very soon.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not so sure. All that lovely oil and gas to power their factories. Paid for by useful western idiots who "need" the the newest I phone.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What kind of phone are you using right now? You useful idiot.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not on my phone, but my phone is 9 years old. And its a Sony. Okay by you, pal?

Will be pretty massive if it includes energy firms mate, that's a fight you don't want to lose.

SWIFT is the international payments system. for worldwide transfers.

Russia has alternatives, but it is still a pain for any nation not to have it at their disposal.
