Also worth pointing out that:
- the Bolsheviks recognised the Ukrainians as ethnically and culturally distinct from the Russians
- the Ukrainian SSR was a republic in its own right, and with its own government (under the Communist Party of Ukraine) and legislature
- the Ukrainian SSR was, independently, a founding member of the United Nations, recognised as a member in its own right, with Moscow’s backing
- the nation of Ukraine is a *successor* to the Ukrainian SSR, not some completely new republic conjured out of nowhere.
The idea that Ukraine didn’t exist or have any well-defined identity of its own before 1991 is absolute bunkum.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So, you're not an internationalist, comrade🤣
Not having a pop, it's just the concept of nationality, nationalism, cultural and ethnic distinct identity, borders drawn on maps, is all a bit, right wing, innit.
Russians are not our kind, springs to mind.
Could apply to anywhere on earth of course, and any group, any distinct cultural and ethnic group...and white supremacists use such terminology.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I am absolutely an internationalist, where international cooperation is voluntary and based on democratic mandates established by peoples able to self-determine.
I am pointing out that Russia and Ukraine have been distinct entities with distinct identities for a century, as acknowledged by the Ukrainian and Russian people and, until Putin rocked up, both governments.
This is a matter of international law, of self-determination, and of protecting freedom and democracy against the will of an authoritarian dictator.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Tbab, do you think Erdoghan should retake the former Ottoman Empire? Ridiculous?
As ridiculous as thinking Russians and Ukrainians are the same people. And all those former parts of the OttomanEmpire have a shared religion and close racial/ethnic ties.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Rewind lol.
Russia and Ukraine also share culture, language, ethnicity, inter marriage, watch same TV and follow same sports and live side by side and share history and religion too, like orange and green, so to emphasize the difference or what makes people distinct of separate is kinda regressive and a bit far right?
Of course, Ukraine and Russia have far right racist, ultra nationalist and natzi groups and elements in the armies and militia, so that is another similarity.
This in no way means Ukraine is really Russian and Putin is right or Ukraine is not a nation in its own right, but focusing on what makes people distinct, using ethnic and cultural or nationality distinction is problematic, especially if applied across the world, or say America, Europe or middle East.
Kinda divides us all up on identity into ethnic and cultural and nationalist tribes or groups....and who does that?
Not a dig at Q or Rosso, merely an observation.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I live in a 6 storey apartment building with 13 apartments per floor. I couldn't count the ethnicities or nationalities in the building.
There are only 3 guys in the building I say more than hello to. 1 is Congolese. 1 is Ukrainian and 1 is anold rightwing Canadian guy. We all get along grate.
Just respect each other. What a concept.
I was thinking of becoming a Buddhist because they're so peaceful and don't believe in killing.
Then I saw the monks in Myanmar.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So, 78 apartments with multiple ethnicities and you only get on with 3 others. Kind of shows cultures don't mix well. 😂
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That is how I read it, lol.
We all ignore each other, like one big divided family🤣

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The question being answered was about the distinct history and identity of Ukraine, and Putin’s (and peks&rsquoattempts to deny it.
Beyond the false narrative, all of it is a complete smokescreen in any case.
The cold, hard, undeniable fact is that you have an extant free, democratic nation of people, who have and deserve self-determination, being invaded by an unwanted aggressive foreign power.
The Ukrainians absolutely must be able to determine their own futures. Not Putin.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Agree with last lines, but as we see from how nationalists divide each other into good and bad, local and foreign, alien or native, belonging or outsider, my point from someone who grew up with two people's or communities being distinct, is that focusing on ethnic, cultural, religious or national identity issues often divides and separates people, so beware, is my message to Ukraine and Russian people, especially the youth.
Again, not a go Putin or taking away Sovereignty or independence from Ukraine....sure, we had Brexit to breakaway from a larger entity to take back control, lol.
Joke🤣

This in no way means Ukraine is really Russian and Putin is right or Ukraine is not a nation in its own right, but focusing on what makes people distinct, using ethnic and cultural or nationality distinction is problematic, especially if applied across the world, or say America, Europe or middle East.
Kinda divides us all up on identity into ethnic and cultural and nationalist tribes or groups....and who does that?
Not a dig at Q or Rosso, merely an observation.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Rewind lol.

Joke🤣
