This doesn’t read as a company struggling TBH. It doesn’t break down to P&O ferries level, but looking at the Europe and Middle East segment it is exactly the picture one would expect from a company during the pandemic.treaded water a little bit but back to growth

BREAKING: Russia Today’s licence to broadcast in the UK has been revoked by Ofcom.

Big step - could lead to retaliatory measures by Russia against British broadcasters, particularly the BBC.

Government response this morning (Transport Minister Roberts Courts):

“[This was] fundamentally a commercial decision for the company.”

This is the world we live in. This is the paradigm. It isn’t new, it isn’t revelatory, it isn’t remotely a unique story; it’s just one that the media has chosen to pick up.

Analysts this morning talking more about how “this looks” for P&O more than they are the futures of the unceremoniously dismissed essential workers and their families.

Also disgusting that many commentators in the media are talking about “fire and rehire”.

This isn’t even a fire and rehire situation - the workers haven’t been given the opportunity to reapply for their jobs. The parent company apparently already has replacement workers lined up.

I think the sacked workers have been told to fo to the agencies. Might be wrong though

Afaik, staff only found out about their dismissal yesterday morning (11.10am).

Simon Calder reported this morning that the parent company has said that they “already have staff lined up” to replace those dismissed.

I expect P&O will have told staff that they can approach certain agencies to sign on with them if they wish, but it sounds like staffing arrangements have already been made.

That would check out with reports from port workers who have said that P&O already had minibuses full of agency staff waiting when the (previously) permanent workers were escorted off their ships.

Yeah I heard that too, that they had staff waiting in hotels on half pay until they filled their quota.
It's scab work, waiting to vulture in on someone else's job.

Govt here has announced that Portugal is on track to be 100% powered by renewable energy before 2040, almost exclusively from a solar, wind and hydro mix

The country is already oil and coal free in energy production (last coal power plant closed in Nov 2021), using, internally, only gas in addition to renewables.

Big pledges still being made, including ‘one-roof, one-panel’, attempting to put at least one PV unit on the roof of every single building in the country.

How anyone can think that comparisons between the UK and Portugal are even mildly appropriate is beyond me

History, culture, population size, economy, population demographics, food, music, language - all completely different.

That's your outlook perhaps. The differences are prime.

It seems obvious to me that we have a lot more in common with Portugal, and indeed every other country on earth than differences.

I couldn't decide whether he was joking or not, I decided he probably was. I don't believe anyone thinks talking funny and eating a bit of Tapas now and then has any bearing on your ability to set up a decent sustainable energy network.

Its just a stock list of reasons we cant try anything different here to improve 99% of peoples lives.

Funnily enough its also the same reason the US gives to not have fundamental basics like affordable universal healthcare

To both of you in that case:

Please list the relevant similarities that we have in common with Portugal.

Not sure anyone should rely on the opinions on international commonalities from someone who doesn’t know that Tapas are Spanish, not Portuguese whilst simultaneously ignoring all of the other things that I listed as factors as to why a comparison isn’t really valid when discussing energy supply, labour laws and drug controls.
