In other news some city's air quality is so bad that it's like smoking hundreds of cigarettes a year

Northampton - 189 cigs

This was in a letter to SK:

ty' Imperial College London concluded "ULEZ on its own was not effective in the sense that the marginal effects caused by the ULEZ on improving air quality were small, either at particular locations or averaging across London".

The conclusion was shared by your own Integrated Impact Assessment that states "The Proposed Scheme is estimated to have a minor (NO2) to negligible (PM2.5) beneficial impact on exposure to air pollution and achieving WHO Interim Targets across Greater London". It also concluded "The Proposed Scheme is estimated to have a negligible beneficial impact on carbon emissions in Greater London."
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Cheers, found and read the letter

If their statistics and interpretations are right (as well as their assertions about low public access to transport links in the affected boroughs then I agree

The £270m price tag for expanded ULEZ could probably be better used expanding those transport links to reduce traffic by giving subsidised/viable alternatives..
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah I find it hard to argue with that. Had no idea it was going to cost £270m! That’s not all that much money when talking about transport or EV subsides but it helps! I just think that ULEZ was effective for central London but completely unnecessary for suburban parts of Greater London and punishing those that cannot afford £15 a day.

Not surprised to see Leeds high up on the list. The traffic there is ridiculous.

Can’t think of a UK city anywhere that I wouldn’t find it a bind to drive through.

Current traffic levels render the old thoroughfares practically unfit for purpose.

This is true. Lease car deals plus general population increases are big causes of this.

The expansion of London's Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) has led to a drastic reduction in harmful air pollution, a City Hall report has found.

Toxic nitrogen dioxide concentrations are estimated to be 46% lower in central London and 21% lower in inner London than they would have been without the ULEZ.

In a bid to tackle the capital's pollution the zone was expanded to the North and South Circular Roads in October 2021. It now covers around four million people - roughly 44% of London's population.

Data shows the expansion led to a 60% reduction in non-compliant vehicles within the zone, taking the equivalent of 74,000 polluting vehicles off the roads per day.

The move also reduced overall traffic within the area by almost 5% - approximately 50,000 cars

This is a good report on ULEZ

Thought I'd share this (completely off topic).

The rest of the UK has automatic opt in for transplant and organ donations. However over here you have to join the organ donation scheme - otherwise when you die your organs remain with you.

Last year Stormont came together and "Dáithí's Law" (named after the six year old who's family has campaigned relentlessly for it) was passed. But the final sign off cannot be implemented as the DUP are unwilling to sit, or nominate a speaker. So Stormont cannot legislate. And Dáithí's law cannot be implemented. A last attempt was made in vain yesterday, and the DUP again refused to nominate.

I've got to know the Mac Gabhann family quite well over the last few years, and their son Dáithí is an absolute character.

As the DUP have given preference to their protocol objections over saving feking lives, the final hope is for Westminster to step in next Tuesday. Which I understand is unlikely.

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ireland-64625483

Time however is not on Dáithí's side.

Starmer on his autocratic decision to prevent Corbyn from standing as a Labour candidate at the next election:

‘Asked by reporters if he could "categorically" rule out his predecessor as leader representing the party at the next election, Sir Keir replied: "Let me be very clear about that: Jeremy Corbyn will not stand for Labour at the next general election, as a Labour party candidate.

"What I said about the party changing, I meant, and we are not going back, and that is why Jeremy Corbyn will not stand as a Labour candidate at the next general election."

Speaking in east London, Sir Keir said it was "not the end of the road" and promised "zero tolerance of democratic socialism, of trade unionism, of social democracy of any kind".

“Socialism is an evil and any political party that cultivates it does not deserve power."

Labour was "unrecognisable from 2019 and it will never go back… if you don't like that, if you don't like the changes we have made, I say the door is open and you can leave", Sir Keir said.’
