He doesn't need to read the comment again. Tories and their supporters are deliberately misinterpreting what he said and changing the meaning.

Footballer people having the moral high ground over politicians, I don't recognise this world any more.

I don’t think that’s the case here at all.

Agree to disagree, imo, it's exactly the scenario.

I think the BBC changed its policy in 2020 with regards to social media posts.

Examples cited prior to that as examples of inconsistency are not relevant for that purpose.

I really despise it when people engage in Godwin’s law, he has been rightly criticised by those on the right, the left and most relevantly by prominent Jews, including Holocaust survivors.

I suspect that he has broken to rules which were brought in a couple of years ago by the BBC, which is why he is facing what he is facing.

I have no issue with him criticising policy, personally. But he loses all of my interest or support when he engages in Godwin’s Law. He should apologise for that analogy and reissue his point with mentioning 1930s Germany. There are plenty of words in the English language, he can use them to describe his thoughts on policy without mentioning 1930s Germany.

Here is a link to the new guidelines in 2020 and guess who is mentioned there already? That’s right, Gary Lineker:

What Lineker said was horseshit, I made a point of reading what exactly was happening in Germany in the 30's yesterday and I suggest anybody who thinks that things are similar in modern Britain should do the same

Why would you be a reliable narrator on matters like this? It would be like asking a butcher what he thinks on veganism.

If he's there with a notepad he should give the beeb a call, they are probably desperate for some footy journos.

I love the idea that his match report will probably be 90% about starmer.

Its the same bond crisis that UK had under Truss. Banks have continued to lend knowing their customers cannot repay living in some delusion that interest rates will go down. Countries want fiscal tightening as thats the only way to bring down inflation. And this bank is a warning shot.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I am not sure it is the same. Under Truss investors dumped bonds. In this scenario everyone is buying bonds as a flight to safety

Lineker would already be dead if it was Germany in the 1930s or at best in a hospital bed with life changing injuries and with o legal recourse

I didn't think you'd be one of them.

The Tory supporting newspapers made that tenuous link the following day in their headlines, replacing the word language with policy.

A holocaust survivor visited Braverman's surgery asking her to refrain from using incendiary language to describe the channel migrants, as it reminded her of language from 1930s Germany. Braverman refused.

The reason why SVB went under was because it used too many bonds to guarantee their ratios. Then the interest rates went up and those bonds were pretty much worthless as collateral for their risky investments in startups. When they tried to raise money in the market they found there is little appetite for risk until inflation is under control.

There are 3 very different issues with Gary Linekar which are being conflated imo.

1) Gary Linekar is an employee of the BBC and therefore bound certain charter limitations. Its very important for the BBC to maintain its impartiality. It is not a private company and taxes the UK public for all its income. That includes right wing people and left wing. If the BBC allowed a free for all I can guarantee it will lose the license fee. Irrespective of a Labour or Conservative government.

2) What Linekar said if he meant propaganda is a good point. The Cons are using that language because it not only helps their bona-fides with their supporters but also sends a message to the smugglers that this country is not hospitable. The asylum seekers are coming from France, a safe country. Not directly. Why aren't they seeking asylum in France?

3) Labour is even more authoritarian in this and were under Blair and Brown. They know asylum seekers undermine labour and definitely unionised labour. Businesses can pay little to these workers and get away with it.

posted on 11/3/23

The impartiality guidelines aren't supposed to extend to presenters who sit outside whatever subject they're supposed to be impartial about. As such a football presenter is supposed to be allowed to have and share political opinion on their private twitter

Regardless of that the problem here is clearly how inconsistent the outrage is, Andrew Neil and Alan Sugar are almost encouraged to keep hammering Corbyn but the moment someone criticises the govt they have to make a humiliating climbdown or resign?

Censorship of criticism of the state is far more fascist than the useless new approach to migrant boats
