Supposed to be and never tested are two very different things. Would Lineker have garnered the publicity he has without being a very popular presenter on a flagship program? There are a lot of great ex-footballers looking for jobs.
The fact is the media landscape is now very fragmented and its becoming harder to justify a license fee.
So it will be used against them. I am afraid which ever party is in power this is bound to happen even more.
Regardless of that the problem here is clearly how inconsistent the outrage is, Andrew Neil and Alan Sugar are almost encouraged to keep hammering Corbyn but the moment someone criticises the govt they have to make a humiliating climbdown or resign?
Outrage by whom? I think most people are on Lineker's side. Andrew Neil is very clever how he couched his comments. And eventually left because he felt constrained by the BBC. Sugar has definitely reduced his comments. Aren't the BBC in negotiations with Lineker on how to separate his private/public comments? Its not like they sacked him!

Not arguing for or against. Just saying it’s not the authoritarian thing you claim it is. It’s like saying having a passport is authoritarian
Well done for displaying how democracy worked in the authoritarian dystopia that was the previous Labour government though.

How is it not authoritarian?
And I am sure that will not be the response by those complaining about racial profiling and being stopped and searched right now. The difference is that every person would be empowered to ask for ID, a doctor, a nurse, post office etc. There is a very good reason why the general public have never liked being asked to carry one! It is a straight out attack on civil liberties. But I am glad your defence of that only goes as far as your party affiliations.
And btw I am neither Labour or Conservative. And actually felt Lineker had a point.

Nevertheless if you are going to refer to a period in time I don't think you can isolate a component. The language at that time represents the culture and atmosphere of thattime. I don't agree you can choose a single component and isolate it from the social environment it belongs to.
This has been the most authoritarian government for a century.
It has introduced curbs on the right to protest which are unique in the developed world, allowing the judiciary and police to prevent people who have *zero criminal record* from even being involved in organising protests.
It has acted outwith its executive authority repeatedly, including unlawfully interrupting the democratic process by proroguing parliament.
It has ceaselessly attacked the judiciary since Boris took the reins.
It has unlawfully refused to respond to FOI requests.
It has proposed legislation which would allow ministers to overrule judicial decisions.
It is in the process of allowing ministers, without any oversight let alone vote in Parliament, to tear up legislation which became part of UK law whilst the UK was part of the EU.
It has undermined the Commons’ ability to hold ministers to account.
It has watered down reporting requirements on ministers’ interests.
It has threatened to pull the UK out of international conventions on human rights.
It has referred to asylum seekers - the majority of whom the government’s own process deems to be legitimate refugees - as “swarms” performing an “invasion”.
It has refused to hold ministers who have been found to have broken the ministerial code, some REPEATEDLY, to account.
All of that off the top of my head and a matter of indisputable record, and the list goes on and on.

I think the government’s rhetoric on asylum seekers is both despicable and dangerous; but that doesn’t have anything to do with my affiliation to any particular political party.

Brown introduced ID cards. I know I wouldn't be asked to produce one. However I am sure every non white person would have been by any tin pot bureaucrat who saw race as an issue.

If you say so then it must be true.
They proposed bringing in ID cards, the public opposed the idea and they scrapped it. Not very authoritarian is it.

Did you get yours yet? Hated it when they forced that on us in their authoritarian way.

Well Lineker facking did.
He referred CLEARLY AND SPECIFICALLY to the language used by certain elements of the government and compared that with 1930s Germany.
Are you arguing that we should judge him based on something he didn’t say?!

Suella Braverman has said she will not apologise for her language after a Holocaust survivor told the Home Secretary her description of migrants as an “invasion” was akin to rhetoric the Na zis used to justify murdering her family.
"When I hear you using words against refugees like ‘swarms’ and an ‘invasion’, I am reminded of the language used to dehumanise and justify the murder of my family and millions of others."
Words have consequences.

Partisan in what way?
I think the government’s rhetoric on asylum seekers is both despicable and dangerous; but that doesn’t have anything to do with my affiliation to any particular political party.
I’m not a Labour member, supporter or voter, nor do I associate with any other UK party.
