Director or MD at Merrill Lynch, Credit Suise etc, depressing indictment of some of the people who work in finance but also shows that smart and capable people can have very moronic and ignorant views

He's well educated, not intelligent, which gives him the ability to operate and succeed in this world. These two are often conflated but there's a difference.

For example Rees Mogg is well educated but thick as mince.

I think you're both looking at intelligence like it's a bell curve on just 2 axis

Someone can be incredibly good at numbers but totally uncreative or able to think abstractly & someone can be incredible with people and know how to communicate effectively but can't read

Think Rees Mogg and this Gribben guy are able to be both very smart at whatever they do in finance and thick as shiiiiit

This is exactly what I meant. He's had the best education money can buy and may be good with numbers, although I suspect his career relied more on nepotism or who he/his old man knows. As a human he's thick as mince.

"His historical perspective of what the UK could have done in the 30s was shared by the vast majority of the British establishment including the BBC of its day, and is probably true.

"Again no endorsement, just pointing out conveniently forgotten truths.

I somehow don't think arguing his views are fine because it was also the view in the 1930s before Hitler started invading other countries and before we had knowledge of the holocaust, is the same as saying it after knowing what evil he committed and what further evil he had planned.
