The UK won’t see significant sustained growth until it sees significant public sector investment and/or a much increased disposable income for the bottom half.

Whilst there’s zero will to increase revenue, spending is being reined in, trade is struggling, industry is flatlining, and money isn’t circulating, there’s no way out of the slump.

You can’t cut your way out of a slump. You can’t wait a slump out with a strong currency and no inward investment or mega export opportunities on the horizon. You can’t drag yourself out of a slump whilst half your population is barely making ends meet after all the bills are paid.

Agreed, that’s why we need tax increases rather than cuts.

We really need VAT to be halved to 10% really, that would make a huge difference

Tax increases don't have to be pluralistically applied to everyone. Start with increasing taxes on companies that regularly profiteer during crises, supermarkets, utilities etc. Its done so blatantly it's getting close to rubbing our noses in it territory. Also stop the offshoring of money to avoid tax liabilities, Amazon & Apple being the most high profile examples.

Reducing VAT may help us little people on the street but what good will it do if that extra money ends up leaving the country, or in shareholders pockets?

He thinks this will stimulate spending and money will flow from consumer pockets into business coffers which will then be partly recouped through tax, employment or investment. Truth is the money will stop at shareholders and CEO's or disappear off shore?

It's always best to challenge people like Oscar on things like this. They shouldn't be allowed just to say soundbites without saying how they think it will actually help.

Plus, I'm not totally against lowering VAT as I think it is a tax that disproportionately affect the poor. Implementing it in isolation and without controls to stop price gouging though would have a negative impact.
