Big clubs need the finished article immediately to maintain their income i.e. staying in the CL.
Clubs can't bring in multiple inexperienced youngsters anymore - hence why the likes of Jones and Smalling, over £25 million of business, is hailed as 'developing youngsters'!

Harry redknap loves telling people, not sure the spurs hierachy are too keen tbh.
Anyway I just read his wiki, it states his price was 25.5m Euro's.
Not sure what the exchange rate was at the time.
I was most certianly under the impression we paid very similar fee's for Nani and Anderson.
---------------------
nani and Ando's fee was never disclosed but most reports I read had Nani at 14m and Anderson at 17m
It's all guesswork tho

I think it happened before the "Big money sugar daddy owners" came in. For example if you take West Ham and the players they could have had playing together you will find that they were/are at the top clubs who all paid big money for them.
Ferdinand, Johnson, Defoe, Carrick, Cole, Lampard etc. Now if these players weren't snapped up by bigger clubs paying big money for them, West Ham could have had a good generation of players capable of challenging with a few additions.

But you have to bare in mind a lot of our money, about 70 or so million was spent a long time ago.
If you had spent money on keane, aqua etc a little better then you would have a better squad.
Thats not having a pop btw, its just an observation.
We have spent a fortune granted. But majority of the money spent in the last 10 years at the club, on players, remains here today.
Bar hargo of course.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Agreed. However the article is about the current squad.
We could delve into it further and take for example Ferdinand's fee and exchange it to the equivalent of today's money and it would be a lot more.
When a team is operating on a sell to buy system, which Liverpool were then you have to take more gambles on cheaper players whereas United were able to add to their already great squad with 20-30m players.
-----------------------
United have only ever spent more than 20m on a player 4 times
Berba
Rooney
Rio
Veron
It's safe to say that United's squad is worth considerably more now than what was spent on it
How much are players like Nani Rooney Cleverley Vidic Rio Smalling The twins and Chicharito etc worth now?
What a lovely debate without wum disruption.
I actually think SAF has done well to win a lot if trophies without spending as much as Chelsea. Arsenal who had previously won few trophies disappeared as soon as Chelsea started spending.

Not all of Barcelonas team are their youth products either. They have also spent big money on players.
All we've got to go on is the price paid for these players at the time they joined. Carroll and Torres are worth half of what was paid for them, if that.
Ferdinand is in his last year in my opinion, so i can't see him being worth more than 2m. Vidic is getting on also, so I believe 10m is a reasonable price. Smalling was overpriced due to his potential and he certainly has that but if you are talking what he is worth then I believe 8m is correct. Of course if I was the chairman of Liverpool and was offered him for 15m, I would take it based on potential. Nani is nowehere near one of the best wingers in the world. Cleverly still hasn't shown anything yet. He has been decent, nothing great, of course he has a lot of time on his side and looks to be progressing well but if you are talking about what he is worth I think 3m is a good valuation.
I don't think Fergie has did as well as you suggest at bring in players who are later worth more than you paid. He has nearly always taken a loss. The players that perform for him, usually were bought for extreme prices.
