The current champions who reside in a desirable spot where he already lives, and can pay big wages.

It would have been a good move for him, they’ve taken plenty of our transfer targets over the years.

They took Pedro from us two years ago, nobody accused him of going for the money, and he won the league.

Did united pull out because the player changed his demands?

Have City actually confirmed they withdrew from the race to sign Sanchez because of wage demands?

posted on 22/1/18

To all intensive purposes, yes. We haven’t publicly said anything at all, but we did some communication to the press last week.

Personally, I’m really interested to see where Mourinho plays Sánchez. Could be a great signing.

Any links?

A couple of stories broke accross all media outlets, usually meaning a brief from a club.

This was the first:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42668562

and the second:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42697824

Whether you believe what City said is another thing though.

Thanks.

'It is understood' in journalistic terms often means 'I'm making this up as I go along', though.

With this one, it did break across multiple sources at the same time, which does normally suggest the club have done something to drive it.

Possibly, but the second link reads as though it was directly from the club, and these stories broke on all outlets within a few minutes of each other, usually meaning it’s directly from the club wanting to get the story out there.

But again, it’s all PR so up to you whether you believe it.

Think it was linked to us currently renegotiating De Bruynes contract.

Sanchez is leaving Arsenal because we're a joke side managed by a massive clown, but he's joining United because they've offered him absolutely ridiculous wages.

Good on him. If United are stupid enough to offer that much for a player then no one should begrudge him a move. It is his last big contract so why shouldn't he go for money?

It's conjecture though, so City fans making a massive deal about the club pulling out because of wages are wrong to do so.

It;s fine to have an opinion on it, of course, but some people on here are using it to have a dig, which I think makes them look foolish.

posted on 22/1/18

True. Everything with wages is conjecture, neither city or United release individual salaries.

The other thing is Guardiola did reference it in his press conference too, again without specifics though.

£600k is now the figure

It’ll be £700k tomorrow.

Thing is, it's perfectly feasible that City see this as an opportunity to position themselves as financially response (!)

Or, that for reasons they have no wish to disclose, Sanchez decided he didn't want to join them and they wanted to save face.

None of us know.

Which is why I'm despairing at the silliness from rival fans about Sanchez just joining for the money. It's petty and largely illogical.

No, it’s one of those situations where the truth may come out once everyone has retired, or not at all!

You must know by now though winston that most discussions on this site (and debate between rival fans) are petty and illogical

Not bothered what rival fans think, many Arsenal and City fans will say he’s joining for the money, because that’s what rival fans do.

It’s the press reaction that has really been surprising, some really disrespectful articles and quotes over the last week. Almost like they’re shocked that a top player wants to join Man Utd, it’s been ridiculous.

I think the agent is the driving force here. Only my opinion, but upon United expressing an interest, he would have pitted United and City off each other to get the best deal for Sanchez. City weren't prepared to meet these demands, and made the decision to pull out.

Whether United met his full demands or not we'll never know, but I do think that United were prepared to pay Sanchez more than City were. That doesn't mean that Sanchez only moved for the money however. But as with every deal, it is the job of the agent to ensure that he gets the best deal possible for his client. And given his diminishing transfer value, due to his Arsenal contract expiring, it's usually the case that the money that the buying club save on a transfer fee goes towards the player and, indeed, his agent.

It's not about City being financially responsible. Or United not being for that matter. It's about each club weighing up the pros and cons of the deal and reacting accordingly. It is a good deal for United, irrespective of whatever amount of money they are paying him. United, I would argue, need Sanchez more than City do, and so were prepared to pay more in order to get a player who is potentially/ultimately worth more to them.

The fact he looked so excited about joining city last season looks funny too.
