Also below par?
Not really - it made less than the last two Nolan films but otherwise it was very competitive and in line with expectations.
It made more than double Batman Begins for instance - a comparable first movie.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I expected better, as it's a Batman film.
The Batman Begins comparison isn't credible to me, because it was the first time Batman had appeared on the big screen, coming off an 8 year dark winter, thanks to Batman and Robin ruining the franchise. Batman Begins done well, considering how low the expectations were.
Every Batman related film, post Batman Begins has made more than 850m, which is a number I would have thought achievable by The Batman.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I would counter that it's better to have a blank slate than a slate smeared in shiit.
Which is what The Batman was working with - it inherited the legacy of the highly unpopular Snyderverse and the damage to DC's reputation it caused.
I think its effect is comparable to Batman and Robin, with less recovery time.
It is also simply put - not a movie that would attract routinely attract the total you seem to be indicating - that was never a realistic expectation.
BvS - which btw, had terrible multipliers and basically collapsed after its first week - had Batman fighting Superman.
This had three hours of detective drama interspersed with an action scene every 45 mins.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Conversely, The Batman was identified as something separate to the current timeline and a more grounded approach, like the Nolan movies were, which made it a more intriguing entry. We also had The Joker show that elseworld stories work and this would have boosted the movies chances.
The points about the movies style or tone or even lack of action have less validity when Joke made 1b and that's a largely depressing movie.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I am unconvinced Joker is valid as a reference. It caught the zeitgeist in a way about one movie a year does
The Batman is better compared to other superhero movies with restrictive ratings and it wiped the floor with them mostly.
The movie had no stars really, no expectations and no continuity for fans to buy into.
770m was a very decent result. Not astonishing, but perfectly healthy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The movie didn't have the huge character lead but it still had a strong cast, with Pattison,Colin Farrell, Zoe Kravtiz,Andy Serkis, Jeffrey Wright. Expectations were probably low, I agree, but only until the first trailer was dropped and then the anticipation went through the roof. The lack of continuity is a strength and it should have allowed fans to separate this movie from the rest of the poor DCEU.
My point ultimately is, whilst 770m is a solid and commendable number, I think the movie had potential to do more.
As a side note, I personally enjoyed the movie and I rate it highly. I look forward to the sequel.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you contrast that cast with Christian Bale, Liam Neeson, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman...I mean chalk and cheese.
We're not actually disagreeing on much so should leave it there.
You think it was a mediocre total, I think it was a good but not great total.
That's fine, enjoyed the tete a tete

https://twitter.com/Todd_Garner/status/1672510830410170369?s=20
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The most recent MK movie was a huge disappointment for me. Aside from the opening sequence, the rest of the movie had some terrible dialogue, the story didn't make sense and the action was rudimentary. The first two criticisms are palatable, as it's MK not a psychological thriller, but they failed on the action, which should have been the movie's strength.
As far as Urban goes, he doesn't fit the part of Cage, visually, but he's a good actor and I'm sure he will be able to put in a passable performance.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Director said he's listened to the criticisms and are working on improving everything.
Also gonna be weird af looking at The Butcher without a beard

I liked it tbh, main character "Cole" ? was very weak and his family stuff had little to no effect on the film.
But I enjoyed it and would welcome a sequel
I also agree that its hard to see Urban as Cage
Yeah they should've just went with Scorpion's revenge as the main storyline.
Cole's story, powers everything just didn't feel needed at all.
Hopefully the likes of Liu Kang and stuff take centre stage in the sequel
The action needs to massively improve. They just need to replicate the MK video game cut scenes.

DC's casting is so bad !! I think they throw out the rumours like this to gauge response and help them.
Compared to Marvel theyare a joke in this regards. Pretty much all of Marvels casting has been very very hush hush and 9/10 they nail it.
DC leak all their stuff and their choices are still average at back
I don't particularly care for Marvel's casting post phase 1 tbh.
A few exceptions like Chris Pratt as Starlord or Josh Brolin as Thanos but:
Brie Larson is a joyless Captain Marvel, I don't like Tom Holland's take on Spider-Man at all, and I think casting a Doctor Strange who can't do an American accent was pretty silly.
Does anyone care for the performances in Eternals, Black Widow or the new TV shows?
Granted a lot of this is subjective and also down to writing.
I actually think DC are pretty good at casting - Ezra Miller aside.
Their scriptwriting on the other hand
