Can India win this?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In a word - no. Even trying to score 166 in one session when you're trying to save the game (33 overs left) would be very foolish. Especially with a new ball coming up.
Also, well batted Pant showing he's not just Suresh Raina Mark II. Very well played.
these 2 have been going at a run a ball since they started partnership. Pretty sure 5 an over is very possible

Can they? Yes. Will they? Probably not. It's a huge effort to score at 5.2 an over in the final session of a test match. New ball due in 5 overs which could help them of course but then a couple of quick wickets would end their chances quite quickly so they may look to block out for a draw.

Where have you got that from? There was something like 130 odd runs scored in that session in exactly 30 overs which is 4.33. I very much doubt their run rate even together has been over 4.5.

Their partnership of 177 has come at 4.6 an over. So you're asking them to bat for a similar length of time at an even quicker rate. It's a huge ask.
Let's hope they don't take the new ball and let Rashid keep bowling
Pant is going along at 85 and Rahul dropped in that session from mid-80s down to mid-60s. Nowhere near a run a ball.

This. Plus, a couple of wickets exposes the tail with Jadeja in next. You wouldn't rule us losing 5 wickets in quick succession though. Hence, even thinking about trying to get 166 runs is suicidal.
Hampshire have beaten Somerset by 6 wickets. Title's there for Surrey to win if we can put together a big 1st innings score vs Worcs. Burns currently 29* and Pope rattling along at 44* in one-day mode.
Rashid to continue, Root must be hoping he gets one right as they'll continue to attack him.
I hope India push for a victory. As impressive as it would be, in the context of this series, for them to bat out the whole day with just 7 wickets left (even on this track), I'd rather they pushed to increase the chance of a result for either team.
Its almost *almost* as if declaring at tea and using the rest of the evening against a deflated India side would have been a good idea...
Rashid is costing over a run a ball now. His recall has been so poorly handled. Root clearly never wanted him in the team, given how sparingly he's been used. His bowling confidence must be at an all-time low. Now, just to add insult to injury, he's put in to bowl on a dead pitch and he's getting tonked to all corners.
Shocking man management.

I'd say declaring when we did and having them at 1/3 was a pretty deflating situation. Regardless of the pitch, credit should go to Rahul and Rahane for playing out to the close yesterday and then the pair of them along with Pant today.

Maximum batting points secures the title doesn't it?

Indeed. Also worth bearing in mind that extra time yesterday would've meant more time to potentially win the test at a lower run rate. At the time, though, it did feel like we batted a bit too long.
And yeah, max batting points wins the title.
Surrey have been ridiculous this year. How old's that Rikki Clarke? He's been great for them.

It's all very odd. I can only assume Root is keeping him on to get India closer to the target so they keep going for the win to create some chances by going for one shot too many a bit later?
Indians are always a dangerous side in dead rubbers.
Where's Mark Wood when you need him...
The bookies still have England as favourites over the draw.
