oh come on...the best thing Newcastle have done is come runners up in the Prem in the mid 90's...anything else was a millenium ago

Beat Spurs 5-1 with ten men when they were already relegated to deny Les Bottleurs second spot in a 2 horse race

Of course they're a big club...
Thing is...if you asked he average teenager or 20 somethings in half a dozen US States or African countries who are the top clubs in the Prem...we all know what they'd say

Of course - but they won't be queuing up to get into St James Park amongst 52,000 any time soon!
DA, with respect mate (and I love your well-thought out postings as a majorly sensible Chelsea poster) I have to disagree.
Roman Abramovich buying a small to medium sized Club like Fulham, that have never won a major honour in their entire history and a modest sized, and non-fanatical fanbase and Ground (even if it is on the fringes of the sexyist part of London) do not in any shape or form compare to either Spurs or Chelsea (pre-Abramovich) and the purchase of them would have been even cheaper than we were. Sorry mate but that analysis just does not stand up to scrutiny and it may be one of the few things that even both Spurs fans and Chelsea fans could actually agree on together.
He was looking to buy one of the Clubs near the top of the tree in London not near the bottom. Even West Ham (with a few major honours and properly dangerous fanatical support behind them) have always been in front of Fulham never mind Chelsea or Spurs.
In short there is simply no comparison.

First of all thanks for the compliment, means a lot coming from a poster like you
I wasn't arguing what Fulham could attract, I was arguing what we could've wound up with - which in itself wouldn't have been the end of the world. Location aside, which Fulham share with us, pre-03 looking at us from an outside prospective (through the eyes of a foreign investor) we were only attractive to a point. Good PL standing yes, good team with young players like Terry & Lampard yes, but no possibility to expand the stadium, no real brand to speak of, academy needed investment and our wage bill was far too high, add the debt on top of that and even with the 20mil CL qualification buy out to anyone other than Abramovich we'd have been a very risky business opportunity.
We could've wound up with someone like Bernie Eccelestone who I remember was interested. Someone who'd have swallowed the debt but more than likely cut any excess investment there, or we might've got someone less wealthy who'd have been overwhelmed by the back payments over time, really was 50-50 the way I saw it, but getting someone like Abramovich was very lucky indeed.
Ending up being the perfect storm. We had everything Abramovich was looking for and our biggest drawback to any investor (our financial crisis) wasn't a problem for him
Newcastle are also another very big club, and even though they have won neither the FA Cup or the league for 63 years, I was only seven the last time they won the FA Cup, they still have a fantastic following and I always consider them a huge club.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Newcastle will never be a big club until they start playing in McMahon Tower Stadium, then they'll be told nothing but how big they club's 'grapefruits' are

Sort of lost me there!
Chairman of WWE, was reportedly interested in buying Newcastle a few years ago. One of his things on WWE TV is talking about his massive balls, which he used to call his grapefruits
Just knowing the kind of insane guy he is it would've been hilarious if he bought a football club, particularly a big club like Newcastle.
Very informative - thank you!!

Haven't a clue what you are on about!!!!!!!
Need ZahraIhsanphile or Anfield RAP to see and appreciate a comment like that
Basically a man who once thought dressing a wrestler in a chicken suit to dance in the ring was good entertainment (on a show people paid for) legitimately could've taken over Newcastle a few years ago. They think Mike Ashley is bad
