The size and infrastructure

I meant to type; fan base and infrastructure!
Exactly, Spurs are a big Club, end of. I don't wear Blue tinged glasses that prevent me from recognising that fact.
I have never in my entire posting history ever gone in for all that crap that some on here spout about "Spu uds" or even worse still "Tiny Totts".
I cringe when I see people posting that.
On the subject of being "lucky" and "Winning the Lottery" I have never bought into that concept. The only luck we have ever had is to be situated where we are. We are always gna have rich suitors from far flung parts of the globe interested in buying us because we have always had the potential to be a big Club and Abramovich has now given us the boost to fully realise that potential.
---------------------------------------------------------
We definitely were lucky to get Abramovich. A lot of owners promise lofty investment in football clubs these days but only Roman + City & PSG's owners have truly put their money where their mouth is. Our appeal to rich suitors was only ever based on our location in London, but Roman was still allegedly a whisker away from choosing Spurs instead.
Where the "win the lottery" argument goes a bit over the top is in relation to the theory we'd have crashed like Portsmouth had Roman not stepped in. It was a possibility, but equally possible we'd of got another chairman to pay off the debts without pumping billions of investment into the club on top of that.
Our appeal to rich suitors was only ever based on our location in London, but Roman was still allegedly a whisker away from choosing Spurs instead.
---------------------------------
DA, the story if I understand it correctly is that he didn't know at that point that we were even available but he did know Spurs were which was why he was allegedly in secret negotiations with them.
It is alleged that he was still unsure that Spurs would be what he wanted at the price they wanted for it and in the helicopter flight back to his hotel he flew over the Bridge and liked the look of what he saw and enquired as to "Who is that?", which he obviously wouldn't have done if Bates hadn't dolled it up and further enquiries between his people and Trevor Birch indicated that we would also be a relatively cheaper option because Bates had overreached himself at that point.
With regards to locations in London our manor and Spurs are 2 very different kettles of fish as I am sure that Mr. A well knows now.
I agree with you that we were lucky to get a benefactor like him, but as you say if it hadn't have been him it would have still been someone else, no question about it.
I think if Roman hadn't bought us someone else would've...we were too good a prospect not to be attractive.
Re Spurs & club size...yeah they are a big club compared to let's say Fulham or Crystal Palace...but in comparison to us or Arsenal...questionable
If & when they finally get into the new stadium & then actually start winning stuff...(which isn't a given), then they might be considered as such...for my money currently & in the last ten years...jury out
actually...let's say 20+ years...they were huge in the late 80's early 90's when they had Hoddle & Gazza & when bought Ardiles & Villa over, but for different reasons

Leeds are not the successful club they used to be and swill my mouth out Vanilla either but the legacy of years gone by takes a long time to dissipate and they can still be called big clubs.
They still have considerable fan bases and are probably better described as sleeping giants rather than small clubs.

Sheriff, don't underestimate Leeds support nationwide, they still have a wide ranging fan base built on their success in the late 60's and 70s.
Newcastle and Sunderland, as you say are other good examples of sleeping giants. Another club that has a low profile in these type of debates is Sheffield Wednesday, they used to get huge crowds in days past. When I was growing up they had a fantastic away support even in the old 3rd division.

I agree with you that we were lucky to get a benefactor like him, but as you say if it hadn't have been him it would have still been someone else, no question about it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
There's many different stories relating to that, the one I always remember was a manager (think it was Sven if I remember correctly) advised him that we'd require less long term investment than Spurs because we (a) we're already in the CL, and (b) had half a good team already in place.
The specific location in London is what I meant, but that doesn't mean we'd have wound up with anything close to Roman in terms of an ambitious owner. Fulham have the same location advantage and are the perfect example of what could've been had we not been lucky enough to be bought by Abramovich, they've had wealthy owners recently but no-one whose been willing to plunge the investment that'll get them to another level, just enough to keep them steady. In that respect we did kind of win the lottery, just not in the sense we needed Roman to remain a solid PL club.
DA, with respect mate (and I love your well-thought out postings as a majorly sensible Chelsea poster) I have to disagree.
Roman Abramovich buying a small to medium sized Club like Fulham, that have never won a major honour in their entire history and a modest sized, and non-fanatical fanbase and Ground (even if it is on the fringes of the sexyist part of London) do not in any shape or form compare to either Spurs or Chelsea (pre-Abramovich) and the purchase of them would have been even cheaper than we were. Sorry mate but that analysis just does not stand up to scrutiny and it may be one of the few things that even both Spurs fans and Chelsea fans could actually agree on together.
He was looking to buy one of the Clubs near the top of the tree in London not near the bottom. Even West Ham (with a few major honours and properly dangerous fanatical support behind them) have always been in front of Fulham never mind Chelsea or Spurs.
In short there is simply no comparison.

You obviously have a very limited knowledge of big clubs. the biggest Derby in London is still Spurs v Arsenal, no matter what you think. Sure Chelsea have had a very successful 20 years, and good luck to you and your club for that. But do not try to dismiss Spurs as a big club, because they have had a limited trophy success in the 21st century. They have become regulars in the CL, and about to unveil the best club stadium in the country, if not the whole of Europe. Despite the lack of trophies still have a huge fan base.
Sandy I am well aware of what a big club is...but it's all about realising the dream
As I say...when you do get into your new stadium let's see if the next five years realise your "potential "

We had the same 'mentality' ourselves once upon a time Oscar. In my younger days I went 26 years without seeing us win a major trophy.
All that ended at Wembley in 97, during that time I'd had to endure $purs sighing quality players and winning silverware, while we were signing the like of Gordon Davies and Dave Mitchell.

Brummie, well said. Oscar is posting like a 10 year old, probably the reason I have him filtered, because he thinks insulting posters and clubs is the way to reply. Spurs are anything but ingrained losers if he knew anything about football history, I myself have seen them win 14 trophies. Probably more than he has seen Chelsea win, I would wager, he doesn`t come across as somebody older than the 10 year old I suggested he was earlier.
Newcastle are also another very big club, and even though they have won neither the FA Cup or the league for 63 years, I was only seven the last time they won the FA Cup, they still have a fantastic following and I always consider them a huge club.

Incredible that a club their size hasn’t won a trophy for so long
4 league titles though
