The best trophy to win

It’s not even a debate the league is your bread and butter and must come before any trophy. Like you mention the champions league is fantastic but is in the end a cup competition and the best team doesn’t always win, but if you win the league you are the best there can be no dispute.

League all day, anything else is a bonus. Deep down the mousers know this but wont admit it having gone nearly 30 years without a league and generally winning cup competitions through luck. It hurts them. Its great.

In today's game a lot of luck is involved in winning trophies and they are not necessarily won by the best teams. For me a better indication of who is the best is the attendance figures and income.

For example you can get a dodgy penalty to win the CL like Liverpool but you can't get a lucky attendance. Someone didn't just trip and fall and end up in a seat at old Trafford. People pay to come and watch the best teams and buy their merchandise. Those are the real measures of who is the best team. And at the moment the best team is United.

I know they didn't win it but Liverpool made it a very close affair between themselves and City last season, and had they won it narrowly they certainly wouldn't have been the better team, just the luckier team.

This best team won't win the league this season unless City win it

Nicely written article.

For me it's the European Cup every time. It's harder to win and that's why teams have less of them. I also love the glamour tbh. From the music, to the different cultures to facing elite teams steeped in football folklore the knock out rounds particularly are amazing. Ive often seen stuff like the super cup denigrated by virtue of no-one remembers the winner in such and such year but I bet Utd fans remember the 99 European Cup final. Their jouney to it, especially the Juve games, and the final were insane.

Just my opinion.

Can’t agree anymore, champs league has become a bit of a joke. Madrid won it 3 times in a row and weren’t even the best team in Spain.

Both are good let's be fair and there are reasons you can argue both ways.

Winning the league takes 38 games so it has that argument of being good across a whole season.

But in the CL you play top European sides so there's a certain magic to it that sticking 2 past Burnley at 12 on a Saturday doesn't have. In 2005 when we totally did Real and then went on to beat a.c. Milan in the final in such special circumstances just has a certain magic to it that league wins often don't.

Also not sure the Liverpool fans won't say the league digs are needed or true. We still have the second highest number so have plenty of reason to think the league is a top achievement.

Nonsense and pure confirmation bias. In fact theyve literally completed a study with VAR in hindsight and we would have won the league.

Not as much as Liverpool. People say that luck balances itself out over the course of a season but there's no actual evidence for that.

I didn't say just decisions I said moments as well. A lot of Albrightons helping them get all 3 points last season.

Yesterday I got embroiled in a discussion of the best trophy, so I thought I would do an article about it.
First of all the word pinnacle is one I never use in real life,
eg I bought some Nescafe today, the pinnacle of instant coffee. I always use the word best.
—————-

That’s because pinnacle means the highest point of success, not what is best/worst in black & white terms. I don’t think you can apply the word pinnacle to material things - ie that is the pinnacle of instant coffee. You apply it more to achievable, non material things ie winning the CL is the pinnacle of footballing achievement, that promotion is the pinnacle of my career etc.

Anyway enough of the semantics. Winning the PL I’d say is the harder and bigger achievement. It’s a very competitive league, and the level of consistency required is very high. The CL is glamorous, but in reality a team often only has to win a couple of tough matches. You can lose some group games, get an easy RD16 draw and only have to click into gear for your last 3 matches. With league you have to be at it consistently for 9 months.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
City only had to win three tough games to win the league last year. They p***ed all over everyone else

Yet lots of people point at some of our early European cups and say we only played rubbish teams (who had won their rubbish leagues). You can't really win it seems

Think of it as the European Cup if branding is that important.

Winning the League established you statistically as the best team, and depends less on luck. The argument for Champions League is that the history and prestige of it makes it more nostalgic, plus it creates more drama and excitement.

As a Liverpool fan I would love to win the Premier League over the Champions League, but that's obviously because we've gone so long without a League title. The question is what most football fans would rather have their team win, and I think the majority would say the Champions League.
