Although Messi himself should have finished that tie in the first 20 at Anfield.

---------------

Should he? He had one three quarter chance when it was rolled back to him and he tried to put it over Allison. Then he had a chance in the second half when he shot straight at Allison from a tight angle.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I distinctly remember the best chance that would have killed off that tie in the 2nd leg and it was Messi that missed it. It was early in the 1st half at a period Barca were on top where Barca broke quickly and outnumbered Liverpool's defenders. The ball was rolled back to Messi by Alba and he should have shot. He took an extra touch to take out the last defender, and another recovering player dispossessed him.

He had a couple of runs where his indecision cost him shooting/ creating chances too. Not like he missed buckets of direct chances but usually he'd have seen Barca score at least one from the positions he found himself in.;

In his defence his team mates should have scored the chances he did create.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
wouldnt it be silly to count barcas missed chances but not the liverpool ones in the first leg?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes it would be. But we’re talking about individuals performances. Messi wasn’t at fault for Liverpool’s chances. But what he did do over the two legs was sensational. Liverpool deserved to win regardless. But that’s why they won a team award and deserved it.

Problem is that everyone thinks la liga is s****, with s*** defenders otherwise Messi would get more recognition

----------------------------------------------------------------------

La Liga averages less goals per game most seasons than the PL. It's always been a myth that Premier League defenses are better.
But I doubt that is the problem.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What about the defenses in Copa America. If Messi is made a poor Barca side become runaway La Liga champions then why could he not do it for his country?

It's a myth that this Barca side were poor. They are a excellent team who should have won the CL last season if it was not for Anfield facking them up.

VVD won the battle/war in the CL. Messi has great stats playing for a top side and she should be applauded for that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Agree here. If Messi won Copa America he'd probably be more deserving.

Although Messi himself should have finished that tie in the first 20 at Anfield. So he doesn't get it on that alone for me.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

He dragged Barca to a great win at Camp Nou and put chances on a plate for the likes of Dembele and Vidal who missed. He put another couple of chances on a plate in the 2nd leg for Suarez and Alba who missed (though he himself missed one strange sitter early in the Anfield game where he failed to shoot with the goal gaping). Over the course of the 2 legs of that contest, he was by far the best player.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Zero take ons against VVD
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Just played it in behind him time and time again creating huge chances.

Why does Van Dijk have one of the worst clean sheet records out of any defender in world football this season? Is his job not to stop goals?

His first goal was deflected off the bar, Liverpool’s first goal was a spill by the keeper into another’s path, and another from everyone switching off at a corner. You gonna say Messi didn’t deserve ballon dor because a free kick scored in one game got a deflection? Lol

That stat about Van Dijk was one of the silliest stats last season. Centre backs (especially the ones who sit and sweep) rarely get dribbled (unlike fullbacks and other midfielders) because they rarely isolate themselves against opposition attackers. Liverpool's organization and Van Dijk's positioning as the last line of defense.is why Van Dijk rarely got dribbled.

There has been plenty of time when the attacker is 1 on 1 with VVD whether we were high up or deep. He beat Adama Traroe to a foot race. Attackers don't bother trying to take on VVD because there no they have a 1% chance of getting past him.

Lol imagine we were looking back at the list of Ballon D'Or winners and we saw Sami Hypia in there in 2005 instead of Ronaldinho.

I think the very fact that Liverpool fans themselves can't decide upon who their stand out individual was, when this is an award for an individual, really only shows one thing and that is that the whole Liverpool team should be given the award. Would only be fair.

posted on 2/12/19

If Van Dijk wins it, it will be same as Modric one. Both won big things and were probably best players for their teams, but are they really better than Messi? Messi should win it every year. It should be based on individual performances and not team trophies.

VVD would get in any team in the world. Modric won't have got in the City or Barca midfield. It's very different.
