The thing about United getting more time was quite misleading.
Seem to remember there were 2 different reports done.
One where all United games were added, and one where only games in which United were losing were taken into account.
The one with all United games showed there was more added time overall, suggesting that there was actually more time added on for games where United were winning, than when they were losing.
So United's opponents actually got more added time. But that wouldn't fit the narrative.

I watched this match again recently and although Bayern had the better chances, the game was pretty even - United had more of the ball it seemed and the stats posted support that - but it was also a pretty scrappy game in truth. Not a lot of great play by either team. Beckham was the standout player in CM for me though. He was outstanding that year.

You know what I partially agree with you. He was a very good player but not one of the all time greats that he’s been portrayed as since retirement.

I've spent a lot of time watching old United games during lockdown and he really, really was quality.
I also watched the England vs Croatia repeat that the BBC played and out of the midfield 4 of himself, Becks, Lampard & Gerrard, I thought he was by far the best. I actually thought Gerrard was the worst (on the day) - the amount of times he gives the ball away compared to not just Scholes, but Lampard too was interesting to see.
Scholes' shaping of the play, passing precision and intelligence was different level to most of his peers.

Gerrard was 23. Scholes was 29. Obviously he was using his experience at that point. Gerrard was still the lung busting, box to box all action player at 23 and therefore youd expect more adventurous play to result in more lost balls.

But Gerrard wasn't giving it away just through 'adventurous' play. There were a few occasions in the game where he was just outright sloppy. Gerrard's a tremendous player and I don't really like the 'who's best' debates, but it was mad that Scholes during him prime wasn't tasked with orchestrating midfield for England. In that game alone, he too played a number of adventurous passes - it wasn't as if he was playing it safe. He was just a cut above in terms of technical ability and controlling the game.
It's crazy how far off winning anything England were during the late 90's and early 000's.

Keegan’s rant derailed Newcastle’s title chances: There were two games of the season to go, their lack of ability to grind out a 1-0 is what cost them.
Scholes played left-wing for England: He played on the left of a diamond about 5 times out of his 66 caps. He also struggled for England after the 2002 WC and fans were clamouring for Gerrard or Lampard to replace him. As much as I love him, there’s an awful lot of revisionism with Scholes.
Tottenham nearly won the league in 2016: They finished 11 points behind Leicester, were never officially top at ANY point in the season, Leicester took four points of them. They were nowhere near winning it, not even close.

This is a bit of a classic, isn't it?
People forgot two things:
1. Much of RvN's time with us was spent during a period of transition in playing staff and the emergence of Chelsea on top of Arsenal.
2. We played terrific stuff with both Ruud & Saha in the same lineup.
It might be fair to say we played *better* with a more fluid, interchangeable attacking line-up, but there's this idea that we couldn't play very good football with a genuinely world class #9 (who himself had excellent close control, quick feet, could beat people and score out of nowhere)... ridiculous.

Berba. It wasn't the best game to be honest was it. I've watched it a few times but only for the pay-off at the end.
I think both teams suffered from having a couple of their best players not available as well as the enormity of the occasion.
BK To add further Saha didn’t play that much the following season. We often play with Smith or Ole up front as well.
Ruud obviously had to go due to the bust up with Ronaldo and his issue with Fergie after the league cup final, but there’s far more to our massive improvement the following year than him leaving facilitating it.

I watched this match again recently and although Bayern had the better chances, the game was pretty even - United had more of the ball it seemed and the stats posted support that - but it was also a pretty scrappy game in truth. Not a lot of great play by either team. Beckham was the standout player in CM for me though. He was outstanding that year.

You know what I partially agree with you. He was a very good player but not one of the all time greats that he’s been portrayed as since retirement.

I've spent a lot of time watching old United games during lockdown and he really, really was quality.
I also watched the England vs Croatia repeat that the BBC played and out of the midfield 4 of himself, Becks, Lampard & Gerrard, I thought he was by far the best. I actually thought Gerrard was the worst (on the day) - the amount of times he gives the ball away compared to not just Scholes, but Lampard too was interesting to see.
Scholes' shaping of the play, passing precision and intelligence was different level to most of his peers.

Gerrard was 23. Scholes was 29. Obviously he was using his experience at that point. Gerrard was still the lung busting, box to box all action player at 23 and therefore youd expect more adventurous play to result in more lost balls.

But Gerrard wasn't giving it away just through 'adventurous' play. There were a few occasions in the game where he was just outright sloppy. Gerrard's a tremendous player and I don't really like the 'who's best' debates, but it was mad that Scholes during him prime wasn't tasked with orchestrating midfield for England. In that game alone, he too played a number of adventurous passes - it wasn't as if he was playing it safe. He was just a cut above in terms of technical ability and controlling the game.
It's crazy how far off winning anything England were during the late 90's and early 000's.

Scholes played left-wing for England: He played on the left of a diamond about 5 times out of his 66 caps. He also struggled for England after the 2002 WC and fans were clamouring for Gerrard or Lampard to replace him. As much as I love him, there’s an awful lot of revisionism with Scholes.
Tottenham nearly won the league in 2016: They finished 11 points behind Leicester, were never officially top at ANY point in the season, Leicester took four points of them. They were nowhere near winning it, not even close.

This is a bit of a classic, isn't it?
People forgot two things:
1. Much of RvN's time with us was spent during a period of transition in playing staff and the emergence of Chelsea on top of Arsenal.
2. We played terrific stuff with both Ruud & Saha in the same lineup.
It might be fair to say we played *better* with a more fluid, interchangeable attacking line-up, but there's this idea that we couldn't play very good football with a genuinely world class #9 (who himself had excellent close control, quick feet, could beat people and score out of nowhere)... ridiculous.

Berba. It wasn't the best game to be honest was it. I've watched it a few times but only for the pay-off at the end.
I think both teams suffered from having a couple of their best players not available as well as the enormity of the occasion.

BK To add further Saha didn’t play that much the following season. We often play with Smith or Ole up front as well.
Ruud obviously had to go due to the bust up with Ronaldo and his issue with Fergie after the league cup final, but there’s far more to our massive improvement the following year than him leaving facilitating it.

Javier Hernandez being a great finisher. He wasnt. The movement was second to none but he missed a hell of a lot of sitters.
