He waits for the forward to make his move then makes his. This is what coaches will be drilling into players from an early age if you've played the game, you should know this. Watch the ball, not the man, wait for the right time to make your move. Forwards hope the defender makes the move first so they can move accordingly, this is why you have stepovers etc.
VVD is absolutely outstanding at waiting for the forward to make his move then cleaning up. The best I've ever seen at this.
Anybody putting this down as running away or other such nonsense clearly doesnt know the game very well.

He forced him onto his left foot, making sure he couldn't get onto his right or pass it to Son on his right. He was one player against two, with a lot of space between the ball and goal. This means there was a very high change of there being a goal, he reduced the chance massively and was rewarded for it.
He can't be in two places at once so instead of diving in and hoping for the best, he weighed up his options and went with the right choice. If only you understood the game you'd appreciate how good that defending was, as many others did.

Nah, was absolutely the right thing to do in that situation. If he goes to Sissoko to early, Sissoko passes to the other attacker and he has a free run. With what he did he limited Sissoko's options to going on his own, giving VVD at least a small amount of control of the situation.
That said, VVD receives an awful lot of over the top praise for doing things that good defenders have always done.

What is better from our perspective, Son 1-1 in on goal or sissoko in on goal on his left foot with VvD narrowing an angle? He could do nothing else. Didn't panic and made sissoko make the decision. Great defending.
