You’re actually mental.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No. You've just no basic common sense, never mind any sort of understanding of the game. Souness had more success on the European scene than both Scholes and Keane so it's completely naturally that people around Europe would know about Souness before Scholes and Keane, especially of a certain age.

How old are you by the way?

It’s basic common sense that the world would be more exposed to players in an era where television and the internet increases the exposure to a larger population.

David Beckham was the most famous footballer on the facking planet when he played with Scholes and Keane.

Playing in a few European Cup finals in the 80’s isn’t an increased exposure to 20 years in the digital age in the most popular team in the most popular league in the world.

Gotta be on the wum.

And yet Souness was mostly only seen in the rest of Europe in the final of the competition.

Sure his exposure was far more than modern day players.

TOOR,

I get the point your making, but a cursory Google of the route Liverpool took to the European Cup final’s in the 70s does illustrate that it was a bit of a cake walk competition for the English, Dutch and German teams.

Between 1971 and 1981, three teams won it three times.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not sure what point you're arguing here? You're arguing that the CL is more difficult to win that the European Cup as it has a greater quantity of top teams?

If so, this was not what I was debating. I was debating that "the European Cup was crap in them days...it had teams like Bruges...".

The debate you're having is a separate one all together, which I'm also not sure I agree with. The group stages are usually pointless as you know who is going through. Then you have four ties. You don't play all of the best teams, only who you draw. So yes, perhaps most of the time, it's more difficult, depending on the draw but there's not this great big disparity that modern fans appear to think and most certainly the European Cup wasn't crap ffs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Harder to qualify as you had to win the league, but far far easier to win for the teams involved.

When was the last time a Swedish,Belgian or Dutch side reached the final?

Back in the Liverpool pomp, you had 1 Spanish,1 German,1 Italian team and maybe 1 Dutch team to worry about.Sometimes you could get to the final and win without playing a top side.

You have just been knocked out by the third best team in Spain ffs.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
As I said before, back then the top clubs didn't hoover up all the top players from the other leagues in Europe, so naturally they have regressed since that happened. Ajax are a good modern example of this. Only last season they got to the semi-final and straight away their two best players were taken from them, by European superpowers in Barca and Juventus.

In regards to Atletico, they done us tactically and fair play to them. We're a far better team but they were the team out of everyone I didn't want to play as I knew they would stand the best chance of beating us. It happens.

posted on 14/4/20

Ajax another good example during the 90s when their 'crap' league was won and then the top European clubs hoovered up all their talent. Davids, Kluivert, Van der Saar, De Boer etc etc.

These sides are becoming less and less now, too few repeats of Ajax from last season(but when it does happen, the best players get hoovered up by the top European clubs) and because of this, people think these sides were always 'crap' but this simply wasn't the case.

Souness would have never, ever have had that kind of exposure on global level - despite playing for the European champions. I can’t believe this is even a discussion.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

He didn’t. TOOR is being an idiot again.

Even back then Souness was lesser known than the likes of Grobbs, Hughes, Dalglish, Rush, Barnes and Hansen.

Souness from that era was very similar to Paddy Crerand from the 68 United team.

8 games to get to the final and those games only televised by the host nations in almost every season(away teams shown also sometimes in their own country)

How could Souness be known throughout Europe when only the final was televised for a big audience

Barnes was later.

However, forgetting that, I never said Souness was Liverpool's best player or most renowned.

You're talking crap again. I said he was captain, star player and top goalscorer. Which he was.

A team from England vs a team from another country. Can you give us the viewing figures for these finals so we have an idea on how widely watched they where.

Last season 2 English clubs 380 million year before with real madrid was 480 million.

Viewing figures for all the group and knockout games is in the billions.

Can we just stop with that chat that Souness got more international exposure than Scholes and Keane. It simply isn’t true, but virtue of technology if nothing else.

Anyhow, I'm out.

My final say on the matter is it is very unlikely Pogba didn't know who Souness was and it was a dig and if he really didn't know who he was, he'd have had a different dig. Also I wouldn't blame Pogba for the dig, considering Souness' comments, who is not alone in these comments by the way, they're shared even by many on the United board on here.

Enjoy.
