Not saying Liverpool are the best team ever, I'm saying they are the best side in Europe at the moment.

You’re a little biased though.
I’m not sure I remember the last time the best team in Europe lost at the last 16 stage of the champions league though. In fact I don’t think it’s ever happened. Liverpool must just be unlucky I guess

Yep
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Barcelona reigning champions of europe from 2006 lost to us in the last 16 the very following year.

If I'm not mistaken, around that time there were a few seasons in a row where the holders went out at the last 16.

Yes. The following year milan knocked out at the last 16. Im pretty sure both barca and milan at that time were regarded as the best in europe.

It happened to us too against Benfica, even though we were far from the best team in Europe at the time.

Makes me laugh this shambles. He listed barca bayern psg as teams that are the creme de la creme. We beat 3 of them last season. Wiped the floor with bayern at their home patch. Smashed barca, a result which was on the cards for me after the 1st leg where even messi acknowledged that barca were very fortunate to win like they did. But of course wahl knows more than messi. It was a freak result.

Fair play to atletico, the won the tie. They hung in there, but they were battered at anfield and had it not been for a shambolic mistake from our goalie they wouldve been out. They were out on their feet, shot to pieces prior to that mistake. They really were not very impressive and id expect man city to wipe the floor with them if they drew them.

City and liverpool are the 2 best teams in europe. Bayern arent far behind. Then there is a dropoff. Bayern may next season take that mantle if they continue to kick on but they have more to prove. Dismantling an average chelsea team doesnt overly impress me. Lets see how they do against city if it comes. They were given their test last season against us and were comprehensively outclassed.

Milan weren’t even regarded as anywhere near the best team in Italy.

Milan absolutely wiped the floor with man utd in that 07 semi finals with a performance at the san siro that had people heralding them as the best thing since sliced bread. Yet a few short months later they are nothing.

Ok mate 👍

Where did I say that? I said they weren’t even regarded as the best team in Italy, as they weren’t. The season Milan won the CL Inter were regarded as by far the best team in Italy. The season after they still were, even if Roma pushed them close. Milan failed to qualify for the CL the season after winning it. They weren’t anywhere close to being the best in Europe in 07/08.

So let me ask you this. If man city win the champions league this season who is the better team us or them?

The point im making here is whats the barometer. You appear to be using league form as the barometer as to what makes a team the best in europe. The original argument here was that atletico are a better team than liverpool because they beat them in a 2 legged knockout tournament. I appreciate you werent part of that argument but what im pointing out is the lunacy of a team being regarded as poorer because they lost a 2 legged tie.

posted on 1/6/20

And for a couple of years after when Kaka left. Needed Mr. Allegri tactics to be good again.

You have to factor in all things when talking about the best team in Europe. Which is why Milan weren’t ever considered the best team in Europe as they were nowhere near the best team in their own league.

I don’t agree Atleti are better than Liverpool. I’m just making the point about Milan.

posted on 1/6/20

I'll certainly concede that milan side was starting to tail off come 2008 but 2007 they were still regarded as 1 of the best around. There werent many better, english teams wernt quite there yet, id say they peaked 2008 onwards, bayern were awful, madrid not up to much and barca had been dumped out by us.

So whilst you may say inter were better than them. The reality is not many others were. You may not have rated milan that highly but they were amongst the best of a fairly average bunch.

City and liverpool are the 2 best teams in europe.

City at their best from 17-19 haven’t been in the top two teams in Europe, this season where ole Gunnar Solskjaer has done the double over them and they’ve spent the year competing with Lester city for 2nd place, they’re definitely nowhere the top two teams in Europe.

And I still think Liverpool lack one or two players to take them to that elite level that Bayern Barca etc are at. Their midfield lacks quality and they need a better centre forward.

you think too highly of Liverpool and not highly enough of atletico. Atletico are a very very good team who deservedly won the tie.

Wahl bro, it was as much (in your words) a ‘freak’ that Atletico went through as it was that Barca went out last season to Liverpool.

Liverpool were 1-0 up and were a hit crossbar away from deservedly going through on the night as they dominated the game - Atletico were going full Mourinho that night and needed a freak goalkeeper error in extra time to finally get back into the game.

Do you dispute that dude?

posted on 1/6/20

The goalkeeping error made it 2-1, right? So how did Liverpool lose 3-2? You can’t blame the fact they lost two games and conceded 4 goals one one goalkeeping error that wasn’t even that bad might I add. The goal could have still been prevented even after the keeper passed the ball.

posted on 1/6/20

And no I don’t think atletico winning is a freak result because I think they’re a very good team that more than matched Liverpool for two games, won home and away and won the tie. This wasn’t an underdog playing against a team much better than them and fluking two wins. Atletico have proved season after season they’re a dangerous and competent team in the CL KO stages and they deservedly beat Liverpool over two legs, comfortably too in the end.

Id probably do this as a top 10 in Europe table and then see what leagues make up the list...

1) Liverpool
2) Barca
3) PSG
4) Bayern
5) City
6) Juventus
7) Real
8) Dortmund
9) Atletico
10) Leipzig
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The team in 1st place recently got their ar$e handed to them over 2 legs by the team in 9th place

Your logic that beating a side over 2 legs makes them a better team is so dumb.

Unless you believe Spurs were a better side than Man City last season? Ajax better than Real Madrid and Juventus? Man United better than PSG?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Spurs reached the CL final, that alone makes them better than City. Unless you think the CL is a tin pot competition, and not worth winning.

Was it comfortable? For 90 minutes in that second leg Liverpool dominated them and won the game (in 90 minutes). Could have scored a few goals as Atletico only came to defend. Then the real freak thing happened in extra time when Atletico scored 3 goals against a stunned Liverpool side.

Nothing ‘comfortable’ about that. Unless you think Liverpool ‘comfortably’ beat Barca 4-0 by your logic.

posted on 1/6/20

I said in the end it was comfortable. They went through by two goals. Once they scored the second at Anfield (third on aggregate) it was more or less game over though

posted on 1/6/20

Liverpool were never in control of the tie vs atletico for any decent period of time. Even after they went 2-0 up they lost that advantage shortly after. It wasn’t a freak result, it was a better, more experienced team in the CL expertly managing a two legged tie to victory

posted on 1/6/20

So it really only got comfortable after 105 mins of the second leg.

Not quite ‘got their asss handed to them over two legs’.

Do you think Atletico are a better side than Liverpool wahl? And while we’re here, do you think Inter are better than Liverpool?
