Indeed we’re not taught anything about colonialism at school. It’s all Stone Age, Bronze Age, Gold Age, King Harald, Tudors, Henry Xiii, WWI & WW2
Defacing and pulling down statues isn't the answer though, it just causes more divide.

Well, I did Gandhi at school, so the British Empire isn't totally blanked out - and that was back in the early 90s. I agree that British imperial history should be taught in schools. As a former English teacher, I can say that a lot has been done there, at least, to promote "non-Western" voices and perspectives.

the folks from the Caribbean arrived to take up menial labor jobs that our working class couldn't be bothered to do until the industries got smashed by thatcher and we became a services economy
Poles arrived mainly during or after the war from fear of communism
most Indians arrived after they gained independence
most Bangladeshis arrived after they too formed a nation to escape persecution from Pakistan and poverty
Most Pakistanis arrived after the partition due to lax immigration laws owing to them being part of the commonwealth of nations.
look at the racial make up of the country both during and after our colonialism. People came to the UK for a better standard of living and due to lax immigration laws not because we were currently ruling their country.

Literary texts are often on the syllabus because they invite discussion about race, diversity, colonialism etc. I taught Heart of Darkness, To Kill a Mockingbird, Othello, novels by Aboriginal Australians, biographies of Egyptian prostitutes, as well as a host of poems from the former empire or by ethnic minorities in Britain or America. You can't really study English, certainly from GCSE upwards, and not have at least some awareness of these important issues.
That said, it's sometimes done in quite a clumsy fashion as well. All teachers (at least, this was the case when I left the game) were supposed to "embed" ethnicity and diversity into their teaching, as well as literacy and numeracy. With the best will in the world, when you're exceptionally busy trying to get people through exams, these become mere hoops to be jumped through, and I'm sure a lot of the ways people get round it are pretty dismissive.

As for free speech and equality... where have I said people can’t have free speech? Find where I’ve asked for any comment to be banned. If I see a comment I don’t like or agree with I’ll argue against it. I’m sure that fits the remit of what free debate involves...you’re the one who brought up my nationality as an insult in this debate which is odd as I haven’t been extolling the virtues of my country on this debate.

wow. just wow.
you are ok with burning the Union Jack
anything else you'd be happy to deface / destroy for your crusade?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Are you really that offended with people burning a flag? Considering how many terrible things happened to minorities under the umbrella of the British empire you’d have thought more Union Jack flags would have been burnt.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
wow so you get butthurt that Elvis made a very accurate comparison to AJ wanting a boycott and yet you feel free to suggest burning a flag of a proud nation is perfectly acceptable.
you are beyond confused Robb.
like most lefties, you want free speech and equality provided it matches your thoughts and feelings, otherwise its abhorrent to you
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Am I a leftie? 😹
And ‘burning the flag of a proud nation’? Oh I get it, you’re wumming.

It's insane how little so many British people knkw about their history especially the history of the Empire, its not thought in schools though so understandable.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Indeed we’re not taught anything about colonialism at school. It’s all Stone Age, Bronze Age, Gold Age, King Harald, Tudors, Henry Xiii, WWI & WW2
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, I did Gandhi at school, so the British Empire isn't totally blanked out - and that was back in the early 90s. I agree that British imperial history should be taught in schools. As a former English teacher, I can say that a lot has been done there, at least, to promote "non-Western" voices and perspectives.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's good to hear, its needed in a country that has a massive population of ethnic minorities who are in the UK because of colonialism.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Literary texts are often on the syllabus because they invite discussion about race, diversity, colonialism etc.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Egyptian prostitutes 😂😂😂
That’s mad, could you provide a brief general précis?

.....
Why would you think that? You chose to live in the U.K. so it obviously didn’t bother you that much. You also chose to live in Spain who were no better than the British when it came to Imperialism.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ah yes, VC logic. If you disagree with a countries history you can’t live there.
