We are only 2 points better off:
Last season - we beat Everton and West Ham at home - 1-0 and 2-0, and lost 1-0 at home to Newcastle.
We lost 2-1 at OT and 1-0 at Saints
Total 6 points
This season:
We lost to Everton at home 1-0, drew 1-1 with Newcastle and 3-3 with W Ham
Beat Saints 5-2 and Man U 6-1
Total - 8 points
8 minus 6 = 2

Considering aside of City our nearest challenger was 33 points behind us last season I really can't see how, unless City pick it up, we don't win the league.
I cannot see a 40 point swing between us and Spurs, the mentality point made earlier is spot on.
We play poorly and ground out wins, Spurs play brilliantly and come away with a point.
Hallmark of a top 4 side and nothing more.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There is no such thing as a 40 point swing. Every season is different. All teams started on a level playing field. I never quite get all the nonsense about points swings from one season to another. It is a load of rubbish made up by the media.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But I don't think we are a worse team at all than last year. Losing VVD is big but so is signing Thiago and Jota, so can't see us losing many more points than last season.
I also don't think Spurs have improved from last season enough to be getting 90+ points.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s the 40 point swing thing that is nonsense, currently Spurs need a 2 point swing on Liverpool. Liverpool have been great these last 2 years but they have to go out and earn those points again - for instance you beat Villa away last year whereas we are 2 points better off this season than we were in the corresponding fixtures last year - but have we really started closing the gap on Liverpool?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course we have to earn those points again but we've got 97 and 99 points in the last two seasons and our squad has improved going into this season with Thiago and a proper attacker to back up Mane Firmino and Salah in Diogo Jota.
Alisson is back which will make our defence 100x stronger. VVD is obviously a huge miss but aside of one anomaly vs Villa (which was god awful) and a draw v Everton we look exactly the same way we did at the start of last season and the season before.
Spurs on the other hand look pretty hit and miss. As exemplified by beating United the blowing a 3 goal lead.

Yeah I’m not defensive about Spurs, we won’t win the league. My point is there is no 40 point swing, it doesn’t exist as no one can say that Liverpool will get the same or more points this season - you have to earn it all again and it wouldn’t be the first time we have seen the previous seasons champions fall well short the following year.
This season is very hard to judge. Before a ball was kicked I was city or us all the way. Didnt think there was anything between us and had us still some distance better than the rest.
Having seen city now Im really not overly convinced by them at all and with regards to ourselves vvd being missing will have a huge impact on us, it is inevitable.
The 1 thing id say for us is that we have been patchy so far yet still find ourselves level with everton on points at the top. If we are doing that whilst playing patchy then it bodes well for when we do click into gear.
I think we need to just hang in there until january. If we are top or even within 3 or 4 points of top come january and we bring in a centre half then I think we will be well primed to retain our title.
Spurs winning the league honestly wouldnt overly surprise me. Its been such a strange start and im sure we will see more strangeness as the season progresses. They have a quality squad and despite what we all think of him, a proven winner at the helm.

You can’t base it on points gained last season. Liverpool might be better this season, but so may the opposition be, maybe crucial decisions will go against you, maybe you will get crucial injuries at the worst possible time.
