So if you've been made redundant from a 0 hours contract job due to policy in a gig economy that this Government has purposely nurtured and it takes six weeks for your universal credit to come through then what geniuses?

This Government is scvm and anyone who voted for them should stand outside on Thursdays at 6pm and say 'sorry' for one minute.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------
The only scvm are the irresponsible parents who don't feed their children, all of whom have the benefits to cover it
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't either 'side' are scvm.
It's a very emotive subject and not one which should be characterised as 'us' versus 'them'.
It's far too complex an issue.
The UK has a good social welfare structure - perhaps not the best in the world but it's certainly far from the worst.
I applaud Marcus Rashford for bring some attention to the subject, especially when he doesn't need to.
It's clear he has the best of intentions and hopefully his campaign can galvanise some long term, institutionalised change for the better.
I heard from a teacher some time ago that she has to nominate some children in her class for Christmas presents from Barnados if they suspect that they won't receive anything at all.
Coupled with the thought of hungry children, it really upsets me. Particularly as a parent.
I have seen the other side too, knowing that there can be a 'benefit culture' where people can exploit the system to cheat. Whole departments in local authorities have to be set up to counter act this fraud.
I can see the logic in not granting additional free meals to avoid exacerbating the potential over reliance on 'handouts', but given the context, the relatively low cost and the short term nature of the request. They should have absolutely voted to provide those meals.
Then once the dust has settled have some honest and open dialogue about how TF we got ourselves in to this situation and how to avoid a repeat.
This will inevitably mean some uncomfortable truths to be faced on both 'sides'...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I had to read this twice just to confirm it is actually a balanced opinion.
You don't get many of those on here, as some other posters are helpfully demonstrating.
I wouldn't mind, but it actually harms the chance of doing anything about it generally.

I've always thought free school meals should be obligatory really, especially at primary school level. Kids who don't really know how/what they are feeding them, schools and parents are capable of keeping track of what their kids eat and then that way that's at minimum 1 healthy meal a day they are getting you would assume. Maybe not practically the best idea, but something that should certainly be strived for, especially with kids at that age.
Maybe once you move to secondary school, maybe you can put some the option there of a school meal or kids pay for their own things, as you'd expect a child of 11+ to be capable of feeding themselves and getting into habits of eating meals is something that can help kids to a better diet and to avoid constant unhealthy eating as well.
Admittedly only so much can be done, but there are better ways than what were there and hopefully Rashford's actions is an eye-opener for the government. Glad to see his popularity is being used to good effect really, despite the OP's opinion.
I do also understand the other side of the spectrum regarding taking liberties for what we pay for though as well, but in times like this, it gives every family in the country at least an opportunity to save a few quid a week somewhere, no matter who/where you are from.
It’s an emotive issue, but not a complicated one, feed the f*cking kids.
I wouldn't mind, but it actually harms the chance of doing anything about it generally.

Your universal credit finally comes through, it's £1100 for everything including your kids but you've already missed one months rent which is £600 and housing benefit only goes to £450 anyway. Your entire £1100 doesnt cover the two months rent and now you can face eviction and no one has even eaten and no bills have been paid.
But yeah, it's the parents fault. You come across as a complete moron tbh.
