Should he? Why? World Cup we had players like dier, maguire, lingard, trippier etc. We done well, his first tournament and with a young team.
All well and good saying we should have got to the final but we were a couple chances (Kane to sterling) away from doing that.

Yes I think he should. Got a kind draw and only had to beat Croatia to reach a World Cup final, which we were leading. Got found out tactically though.

Nations League we should have beaten Netherlands again after leading.

World Cup was a missed chance but it wasn't an underachievement, it was a massive step forward from the Hodgson year.

People say we should have beaten the likes of Colombia and Sweden but under Hodgson we weren't, that's the point. People called our group in Brazil the group of death but neither of the teams we lost to pulled up trees while on paper we were way better than Costa Rica. At the Euros we won one game out of four versus Russia, Wales, Slovakia, and Iceland!

We beat Sweden in the 2012 Euros under Hodgson though.

I know we shat the bed against Iceland but I honestly don't think, results wise, we've been that much better with Southgate. Still have a no better win rate against the better teams.

i think your squad and logic is what the majority of us are thinking and would like to see but will it be Southgate's is what we doubt. Tbf to him its a difficult selection with the top heavy options.

He may take a utility player, I just don’t think he takes three central midfielders because he has Dier. Foden is more likely to be the utility player as he can play in about five positions along the midfield and attack.

The cm’s will be four of Rice, Henderson, Phillips, JWP and Bellingham. That’s the most confident thing I can predict about Southgate’s squad for the Euros. The attack and the defence is the hardest one to predict for multiple reasons.

I reckon he goes:

Pickford, Henderson, Pope.
Trippier, Walker, James, Coady, Stones, Maguire, Mings, Shaw, Chilwell.
Phillips, Henderson, Rice, JWP.
Foden, Sterling, Rashford, Mount, Kane, DLC, Sancho.

I reckon it’ll look something like this, barring injuries. He’s gonna leave us short in attack due to his insistence on having three facking right backs in the squad. And I think he’ll controversially leave out TAA and Grealish.

To be fair mate, the squad I listed is what I think Southgate will take. I am 95 percent sure, Dier is the only 50/50 but the concept of a utility man remains.

I would not take three RBs, I would not have Pickford in the first XI and I would find a way to bring Saka too.

Win percentages, without looking it up, Hodgson may have a superior record - I am by no means saying Southgate is the real deal or should be manager long-term. The differentiator is Southgate has won games in tournament football he was at least expected to win, Hodgson consistently did not.

Based on one tournament I suppose, but even then we could have easily gone out in the round of 16 to Colombia on pens. I mean England winning a pen shootout already tells you that Southgate is more fortunate than previous managers.

I think he's benefitted from coming at a time when the Golden Generation had broken up and he had no choice but to play the younger fresher, faces. Now he has a better squad than we have had since the GG so he really has no excuses anymore.

He’d be leaving out Grealish for Sancho, Rashford, Foden and Sterling. He’d rather leave us short in attacking numbers than in defence and midfield.

I think he’ll eventually drop Dier. If Shaw’s fit it gives him another utility option for the back three as well - Shaw’s been really good as a third cb for us. Walker and Shaw give him the utility in defence that Dier is less important.

To be fair, a manager taking England to a penalty shootout success is an achievement. I agree he has got lucky in some ways in that the situation has suited his pro-youth policy while also lowering expectations

A manager has little influence over a shootout usually. It just so happens that he was the manager at the time when we eventually won one.
