Neither am I. I don't necessarily agree with what the English Heritage have done, but I'm not going to rage about it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s not rewriting history but it is looking at it out of context to the time things occurred
Perhaps in the future folk will look at our Prime minister and wonder why we elected a serial liar and clown shoe
Nowt strange as folk

😂

The grey area for me is relevance of it. As far as I know, Blyton wasn't a racist, but used racist tropes which were quite normal then. I may be wrong and she had some kind of agenda, but I doubt it.

That isn't to say that a modern take on things shouldn't occur, but I don't think it should be in a brief description. She is remembered because of her books. Which engaged generations into reading... something that is quite absent today beyond Twitter.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

She’s remembered due to both and it’s not a modern take, it was recognised during her lifetime too. I read her books in the early eighties and even then the racism in them was openly discussed, it was part of the analysis of them. I learned as much from her books about that as I did anything else. Still enjoyed reading them at the time (secret seven in particular) but it would be mad to not acknowledge it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
You might be right. You are more clued up on it and Blyton than I am. In your discussions was it concluded she was a racist or was a product of the time?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

That period, they go hand in hand to a certain extent. She was criticised even during her lifetime for it though, that suggests she went further than just being the latter. There’s also that she embedded it in her writing and characters more than any comparable authors I can think of.

I’ve got three children and they’ve all ready Blyton books at some point in their childhood still though as, like I said for when I read them, if they’re approached the right way then they can have even more value.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not certain kids see the racism in hbd books a bit like C.S. Lewis dressing “god” up as a lion
I read many famous five secret seven in the 60’s read them to my son in the 90’s still have all of them in the loft
As Bob Dylan said
The times they ……
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I remember lots of golly’s and ginger beers! (And we all know what that’s rhyming slang for)

Bless old Enid, she was a card.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You could still buy that jam in parts of Scotland until recently.

Today, kids in America and soon to be London, are being taught they are racist and privileged if white, and oppressed if brown, black, Asian.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Good, about f*cking time too.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Glad you are about, as posters denied anyone said white people were inherently racist or privileged on this site, but you always said that.

When does a white baby or toddler become racist and privileged, as nursery staff need to plan ahead???

----------------------------------------------------------------------
When people like you pass down your prejudices, hateful ideologies and awful religions.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
When do white babies and toddlers become racist and privileged, as that is the mantra about white people, from many BLM minded.

My daughter is not racist.

Nor am I.

Fox News was quite amusing on the early days too, until they started pushing sedition, fascist insurrections and coups.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Were CNN behind the 40 odd murders, riots, lootings, cop killings committed by supporters,of BLM and antifa?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Must have missed that, when did that happen?

People were racist with language and views years ago and we progressed, but white, black, Asian folk still use racist language about each other, just not in books anymore.

And nowadays, the bad guy is more often than not a white man, because that is safer, lol.

Of course they still use racist language in books, or in tv or film. Difference nowadays is how it’s used - it’s usually to say something about the character rather than the author using it as a vehicle for their own prejudices.

Who is teaching these kids those things? teaching them that certain people in history done horrific things in the past, to other people, due to the colour of their skin is a just a fact, it's not saying that white kids are racist and black kids are victims

I have seen black actors and members of the public public call white people, cracker, whitey, honky, white boy, pink or pig eyes etc, in recent films and documentaries.....not in an ironic, funny or empowering way.

Rightly, if a white person uses a racist term, they are portrayed or labelled racist, right away, but not so if it is black talking about white in certain circumstances.

The very fact white people such as myself get called racist for having a different opinion to others, is racist, imo.

Teaching white kids they are racist and privileged, is racist and divisive too....especially separating a class to make kids feel guilty, and others victims.

No good will come of it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hardly any of that has got anything to do with what I put. If it’s films, which ones are you talking about so we could at least discuss the character. If it’s documentaries then why are you using that as a comparable?

“Rightly, if a white person uses a racist term, they are portrayed or labelled racist, right away, but not so if it is black talking about white in certain circumstances.“

What circumstances?

We were discussing Blyton and whether things have changed since then. Yes they have because it’s no longer deemed acceptable to make a character automatically bad because of their skin colour.

“The very fact white people such as myself get called racist for having a different opinion to others, is racist, imo.“

Depends what your opinion is, surely?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
And yet hilariously, Gammon Broadcast News is busily telling you (and the rest of the “unheard silent majority” that you are in fact the victims.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I do not buy into that victimhood mentality at all.

Labelling white people as racist and privileged and teaching this to kids is my issue.

It is racist and divisive.

Sizzle.

Years ago you admitted I would protect you if you were being attacked by racists, and I think you said the same about Weare at the time, who you know socially.

So, how does that square with labelling me a racist, prejudiced, religious bigot, lol?

The only things I hate are bigots, racists, extremists and the French.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’d steer clear of GB News then.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Haha, has Macron replaced Neil, ffs

Once again, no-one does that but there is a massive part of history where white people enslaved a large population of the world, and that is why we are what we are today, why would you not want kids to learn that? It's a big part of history..

Secret seven or famous five are less overt examples, I’d agree with that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I do remember a bit like five go mad in Dorset etc
The villain often had “dusky” skin
I never thought about it as a kid
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you think things have remained the same?

Literature, tv, flm, comedy are wokery world now.

And if anything, whitey is usually the bad guy.lol

----------------------------------------------------------------------

It’s not a choice between Enid Blyton’s worst (of which secret seven or famous five aren’t) or “woke”. There’s a world in between.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Never said otherwise.

People were racist with language and views years ago and we progressed, but white, black, Asian folk still use racist language about each other, just not in books anymore.

And nowadays, the bad guy is more often than not a white man, because that is safer, lol.

I blame Dr Who, tbh

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course making a character bad based on skin tone is wrong...does that need repeating, lol.

I am not defending what went before, on a jam jar, book, slavery ship or sit com.

Today, it is seemingly ok to label white people as racist and privileged, based on skin colour.

And the bad guy now will be more often than not, a white male, which is why I jokingly named Dr Who.

And racist terms for white people are aired on tv, from black actors and the public, with no comeback our criticism.

You'd protect him? I'd wait until they finished and give Sizzle a wedgie.
----------------------------------------------------------------------Don’t worry we will never be in the same space.
