You might be right. Bairstow has just looked a bit more dependable and I noticed Ramprakash (yeah I know) talking about a tweak he's made to his batting stance where he's just a bit further over to off so you can't see the stumps anymore. He's generally playing a bit more patiently and not going looking for big booming drives like he does in ODIs.

It's for this reason that I thought he might be a better bet at 3 than Malan but maybe it's best to keep things that are working where they are for now.

Anything that removes that humongous gap between bat and pad when he drives is a good thing in my book.

Didn’t Malan bat at 3 last time he played test cricket? I seem to remember he was pretty dogged. He does remind me of Buttler though - really fluent when he gets going but he often takes a long old time to get there and pressure can really build while he’s scratching around.

I think after doing pretty well at 5 (with Stokes missing during the Ashes and other series after the whole affray incident) was moved up to 4 when Stokes came back with Root bumped up the order to 3. Think he had a few bad scores and was dropped during the 2018 series against India.

He's grown as a batsman since then though, he's done pretty well for Yorkshire in red ball cricket and obviously become the top T20I batsman. Very different format I know but surely good for his confidence and probably worth a go.

I think his one issue is he doesn't move his feet too much which works in the shorter forms because he can just stand and deliver but there's not too many test batsmen who have successful careers with a lack of movement at the crease.

Hameed gone. His review was umpire's call.

Bit unlucky there, considering the majority of those shouts haven't been given all test.

Horrendous mockers on the live text feed for Hameed

posted on 16/8/21

Shame for Hameed but him going does set the game up nicely to be fair. England's top 3 all gone so now it's players who score naturally at a quicker rate.

I'm certain England won't be going for the win here but I don't think it's going to be a blockathon.

Doesn't look cut out for this level, Hameed.

Hope he can prove me wrong

The top 3 are like tailenders, that's probably being harsh to tailenders tbh

Here's a funny stat. In this game so far:

Root 207/0

Everyone else 239/13

What’s the chances of some rain at Lords ?

posted on 16/8/21

Well India's tail scored 114 runs in this match and our top 3 managed 69

42 overs on a good batting pitch is enough for Root, JB. Buttler and Moeen to survive. Plus there will be bad light later.

100% this. Our top 3 are the worst in world cricket, by some distance.

Cook retired 3 years ago and this has probably been the case since then.

It's frustrating because the top 3 actually looked decent enough last summer but have all massively regressed (less so Burns) since.

Yea I did think about omitting him, but decided against it

A bit 50:50 about Burns. Technically he is lacking but he's more of a fighter and values his wicket more than others. Sibley is facking hopeless though.

posted on 16/8/21

I really want Sibley to work out because he has the temperament, and someone who can bat time without worrying about the score is a good option to have to lay th foundation for big scores, but he just doesn't seem to be improving.

Not really sure who we try next though.
