At least he’s keeping himself firmly ahead of Burns in the queue of players to be dropped first

I should also point out that Burns is England’s 2nd highest run scorer in 2021 despite missing half the test matches. But people have a short memory with him. Granted 5 ducks doesn’t look too pretty

Indeed, after a hard first day coming off the back of putting them in, we put in 3 days of hard graft to get ourselves into the ascendency and then got the dangerman Pant out early. Since then, it's been 2 hours of poor cricket which has turned a winning position into a losing position unless Joe Root can do Joe Root things again.

Hameed got lucky there

Honestly our whole batting approach with the exception of Root is mostly just schoolboy level

10 ducks by England openers this year It's getting harder and harder to defend them but I just don't know what or who the solutions are.

There’s been no red-ball cricket in weeks anyway, so even if any openers had any form they’d have lost it by now in the white-ball scramble.

Tuffers calling for Malan, which probably shows a bit of Middlesex bias, but I do like the player and it’s hard to think of anyone else beyond kids like Rob Yates who aren’t ready yet. Malan at least has some grit to him. That would mean bumping Hameed to open alongside Burns though which seems like a horribly risky idea.

Just watched the replay of the Burns dismissal btw and yeah, his body shape was all wrong. Head position was dreadful, leaning away from the ball

Less sure about bumping Bairstow up to be honest. He seems to have reverted to his 2016 technique (it’s like he has a white ball technique and a separate red ball one, which is bloody impressive if he can keep it up). I’d rather see him left in place to see if his improvement continues. Not convinced about Malan at 5 either when he’s followed by Buttler at 6. Both of them are naturally attacking players who can get stuck in a defensive rut when they are feeling their way into an innings. Having them both batting next to each other might lead to them both getting stuck at the same time. Whereas Bairstow, for all his faults, doesn’t tend to get stuck on single figures for long periods.
