Religion is simply a body of beliefs and values. Therefore everyone has a religion, no matter what name they want to give to it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not sure that is true, at all.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm afraid it is.
Many things that end in an -ism is a form of religion.

Not the best choice of words to describe Catholic Ireland in that period.

Nah, it's not, mainly because religion involves an all power omnipotent being and my values do not do they.

Heavy conversation for a Tuesday afternoon!
Personally I have no time for religion, it offers me nothing and it just makes no logical sense to me. But I know and love plenty of people who are religious and that's fine, that's their choice.
For what it's worth, I think religion (faith more generally) starts to fail when someone believes they are right and someone else is wrong. As opposed to just accepting you both believe different things.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
True it is heavy, but it's when I had time. It will stay up for a while
All religion and gods are the work of human imagination and morals are also from humans
This is going to be a belter
If there is only 1 god, surely he would have been there at the beginning. If so how do religions come about years/decades/centuries later worshipping a different god? Wouldn't the original (and only) god then make it clear he is THE god to worship and the others are just make believe?
If there are actually many different gods, why would they all create the same type of flawed beings?
Aren't churches only really used for the funerals of the old people who attended them on Sundays? Then the next Sunday around there is one less old person in the congregation. But they do get a midweek day out to the church. It is not sustainable though. One day Margaret will be sitting there on her own on a Sunday and there will be no one to attend her funeral midweek.
People have replaced traditional religions with secular ones. And they are still in the minority on the planet in not believing in a deity.
I think a more valid question to ask is - Are some religions more criticism proof/violent than others?
I do not consider myself religious. Was brought up in the Catholic Church but have a variety of views completely at odds with the church.
I do believe in a higher power but not as described in religious text.
Basically I believe we were created by higher life forms (like the Engineers from Prometheus) and are in a scientific experiment.
They will return at some point to exterminate us.

How does next Wednesday at 2.00 pm suit?
Nothing should be off limits for mockery, but some religious lunatics can’t handle that and think killing the person who mocks will make their insane beliefs more credible

When my oldest son had cancer as a teenager a lot of folk prayed for him to get better and so did I, every day.
He survived and has 3 lovely children.
Did the praying work I don't know but it has given me some faith.

To me religion is just brainwashing to keep scared people in check. As a kid I was in the Boys Brigade and had to turn out for church and Sunday school every week, was told that God was always watching us and we had to do this and not do that or else we wouldn’t go to heaven etc. What a load of nonsense to be filling impressionable young kids heads with. I’ve as good as told my kids to ignore any such ramblings from adults they might encounter in their educational journey.
At some point in history it undoubtedly gave a bit of order and allowed people to feel a purpose and make sense of how and why they were here. But science has allowed us to move beyond that. I’ve seen first hand the strength that faith can give people in difficult times, and while I wouldn’t want to belittle that or take it away, it’s daft to me as it’s all founded on a load of nonsense and I just could never buy into it. Throw in the historical and modern day bloodshed caused by warring factions of so called peaceful religions and I really have no time for the whole thing at all. I hope that as the decades roll on and people across the world have more access to science, information and education that the concept of religion will eventually fade out altogether.

I heard religion is a bit backwards in Korea. Here, when we sit down to dinner we thank god for the food on our plate. In Korea they sit down and thank dog for the food on their plate. Totally backwards. Absurd.
