Been a good read this, and it's great that it didn't descend into Islamophobia or homophobia, thanks everyone

Possibly because any Islamophobic posters on this forum are also homophobic, and this is a kind of wedge issue that leaves them unable to give one enemy a kicking without appearing to ally with enemy?

Hopefully the conflicting position has shut their brains down and left them a weeping mess in the corner
The players could have their say by refusing to play!..
Stay at home, let people know that they don't agree with what's been said, but they could have done that because off the many deaths that seem to be getting ignored by many!..
People could sit at home and ignore the games, but enough players staying at home would bring this crap to its knees!..

I think a similar tensions also exists within liberal thinking as well. You can’t defend gay rights and Islam tooth and nail at the same time.
Bloke is a diiickhead, sadly large parts of Islam are still stuck in the prehistoric era with these type of views. It’s one of the main reasons I’ve distanced myself away from religion because of shiiit like this.

I think you can defend gay rights, whilst also defending Islam against mischaracterisation and the rights of and protections for Muslims.
Modern Islam has suffered politically and culturally at the hands of fundamentalist Islamists, particularly over the last couple of hundred years. We look at the likes of ISIL, Al Qaeda and the Taliban, and rightly call out their bullshiiit dogma as extremist and unrepresentative of the wider faith, but go back just a few hundred years, and you’d find that what are now considered relatively very moderate and even liberal Islamic groups in North Africa and the Middle East might have been considered quite conservative.
Or in short, in historical terms, Islam, globally, is going through a relatively conservative spell, and it’s perfectly possible that that trend will be reversed, and that more liberal blueprints, equally coherent with the texts, will re-emerge.
It’s fair to defend Islam and Muslims, whilst attacking extreme (in historical context) Islamist interpretations.

It isn’t ‘prehistoric’ Islam that’s an issue mate. It’s more modern Islamism and the bleed from that over the last couple of hundred years.
Again, go back a few hundred years and large swathes of the Islamic world were very accepting of homosexuals and homosexual behaviour. Arguably moreso than parts of Christian Europe.

Which brings us back to the question about whether secular organisations like FIFA and the FA should be pushing values that are incompatible with values held by states that they're awarding tournaments to or sending teams to compete with. The £ will win in the end, of course.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The flip side could also be that, hosting tournaments in those places and bringing them into the fray will increase their exposure to external values and accelerate the process of cultural shift.
I imagine that, for example, Mo Salah's presence in the Premier League acts as a window into European football + values for a huge no. of Egyptians. Contrast that to the influence of their previous national hero Aboutrika.
