I really don't understand why this Ozzie clown cares so much about UK politics. He is living thousands miles in some desert and his only contribution on here is talking about things which doesn't effect him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Everyone discussing this are doing so because we either feel solidarity with destitute people from developing and war-torn countries or we are hostile to them. Those of us in the UK are no more materially affected by deliberate cruelty toward refugees than Robb is.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why would you care.

No doubt the scheme will be subject to a range of legal challenges.

Firstly, sending human beings seeking asylum (fleeing conflict, persecution) 5,000 miles away to dentention camps is at best barbaric. And will be rightly condemned by anyone with a moral compass.

Initial costings estimate it would cost upwards of £120m a year (could house them in UK 4* hotels for less).

Not particularly environmentally friendly. But I'm sure the scheme will be carbon neutral...

It would do nothing to address the root cause of the problem. Which has got considerably worse as the UK government opted out/left bilateral agreements with the EU on asylum.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So a pretty similar distance away that the Australian migrant detention centres are from Canberra?

Even if it was £120m a year that equates to about £4000 a head. If you can point me to the 4* hotel that will put me up for that per year please...?

And the root cause you state is wrong. It may be a contributor. The root cause is economic and other migrants. But we know you like to bang on about the EU.

Not sure whether you mean about refugees or Robb's right to talk about it. But I guess the answer to either question is that I see humanity as one big tribe with a common interest in each other's wellbeing. I dislike the idea that 'these people don't matter' because they are seen as belonging to a different subdivision of the human race. So the plight of refugees coming into Europe matters to me, although I'm European, and there's nothing wrong with someone on the other side of the world caring about that too.

By the way, I've often encountered Russian nationalists saying their government's mass slaughter of Ukrainians or Chechens is 'none of my business'. It's between Russia and the people they see fit to murder, which is effectively the logic used to suggest that Robb should have no view on the UK's treatment of refugees.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Human nature is complex, and features both selfish and altruistic impulses. A great deal of society's response to refugees depends on whether the prevailing discourse demonises them and incites panic about competition for resources or encourages empathy and points out that refugees who have been warmly welcomed tend to be among the most productive, patriotic and economically valuable members of society.

Well

1) my sister and a lot of my family still live there so I care about their well-being

I think you still harbor some hatred towards the UK for the deportation they did to your ancestors.

None of my ancestors were deported so ho hum ✌️

As the origin of mankind and giver to the world of all sports, universal language, and good food, we Brits should stand firm. Civilised humanity began in Britain and then spread out around the world. You cannot just come crawling back millennia later because you didn't like where your ancestors went. We Brits don't come invading your countries when we get a bit cold or whatever, why are you trying to invade ours?

Although, I wouldn't be against lining up immigrants as they got off the boat and then pointing left or right based on how fit they are to work. The fit ones get sent off to do unpaid work in exchange for a cabin to sleep in and the ones deemed not fit for work are well, we shall see what has been done in the past and see if we can come to a solution. That's the Britain I would like to see and we are getting closer.

None of them ever think to bring gifts either. We can be persuaded, but they make little effort.

Maybe a Saturday night ITV show where they try and win a place in the UK via a series of entertaining rounds? Both mentally and physically. They need to prove that they are as smart and physically fit as the average Brit.

We need to make this profitable somehow.

I filtered the above account some time ago so missed the post.

It's utter nonsense. Initial costing estimates £120m. And government schemes of this scale have a fantastic track record of coming in under budget...

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-61097114

And as I mentioned on another thread, it will be dropped in due course (assuming all legal challenges overcome- again costing tax payers millions) having served its (diversionary) purpose.
