Rwandan spokeswoman on Sky just confirmed that the new deal between the UK and Rwanda will break international law, as those processed and found to have a valid claim won’t be able to return to the UK and will be settled in Rwanda.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

A layperson knows this so how can the government with access to the best legal advice in the world does not boogles the mind

🀣
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So how are Australia getting away with it?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Where are they trafficking asylum seekers to?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Manus & Nauru (sp) ?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Can't be legal!

If the Aussies are doing it doesn't mean we should!

I've never understood why a refugee isn't made to claim in the first EU nation they touch soil on, bar a specific reason they need to come to the UK. If there was some sort of charter between nations it'd be far fairer in my view.

It isn’t legal.

The International Criminal Court has said it’s unlawful and forms the basis of a crime against humanity.

I find it strange people say we have lost our caring identity as a nation, when the reason most refugees pass through other EU states to get here is because we have the most generous benefit system.

Genuine asylum seekers should always be handled on a case by case basis but we cannot endorse a system where refugees refuse to seek refuge in EU countries because it's more beneficial to come here.

It isn't about race it's about a generous benefit system being stretched to the point it can no longer help the people it's intended to aid.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Does every refugee get access to benefits?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

They have access to the NHS for starters
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And what else, for finishers?

That’s great but not everyone needs medical assistance in their day to day life. Do they get access to benefits straight away? Or at all?

Thay get access to social housing IF they have children with them.

Before anyone asks, I think the Australian model is horrific so don’t confuse my nationality with how I view the refugee crisis

I implore you guys to watch Stateless on Netflix. A 6 (I think) drama series with Cate Blanchett about now bad the whole thing is . Might get you coming away from it with a bit of sympathy whereas you had less before

^ Sorry, that’s the new policy.

I don’t believe the Aussies are still sending asylum seekers to be processed in Nauru or Indonesia (probably partly because it was an eye-wateringly expensive process, just like the UK-Rwandan deal).

posted on 14/4/22

Typical Aussies, eh ? It's in their blood

(Sorry Robb )

Let’s also be clear, the British state has an obligation to many refugees as a result of being directly, or indirectly, responsible for them seeking refuge in the first place.

Every way is expensive...

The government recently revealed it was costing more than $56,000 a night to house 32 refugees and asylum seekers in the Park hotel in Melbourne. Labor said the government would save $19m by shifting the detainees into community detention, describing the ongoing cost as “an unbelievable waste of taxpayer money”.

One UK NGO spokesperson this morning pointed out that it’d be cheaper to house all asylum seekers in 4* hotels in the UK on a permanent basis than send them to Rwanda under this deal

I’m sure the low-tax, small-state Tories will be loving that detail.

Here’s a facking crazy idea, but bear with me…

How about maintaining sufficient purpose-built facilities to house people in whilst their applications are being processed?

Simply exporting the issue to another country rather than coming up with a solution to crack down on illegal human trafficking.

This government can't stoop any lower.

Down to the courts now to challenge and defeat this stupid plan.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
To be fair it’s a bit like coming up with a solution for illegal drug taking. There ain’t one.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What if these drugs were legalised?
Eh? What then?

Most of these drugs are recreational, has no medical merit or use. Will never be legalised therefore the black market will always have a role, sadly.

Two separate issues
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes and no. Two markets with insatiable demand and criminals willing to make money out of that. That the end product is different is largely irrelevant.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Two separate root causes of the issues

Migration - motivation? Leaving war torn country. Escape poverty, etc

Drugs - satisfy addiction

I agree the black market satisfies a demand. I'm talking about tackling roots cause of migration generally.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Immigration and human trafficking are also two separate issues.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Didn't say it wasn't

"Simply exporting the issue to another country rather than coming up with a solution to crack down on illegal human trafficking."

This law has nothing to do with human trafficing.

Is it racism?

Could it be linked to the fact we just had a NI hike to cover our already bloated social welfare system?

Pretty much everything in this post is simply not true, or opinions based on not true things.

The UK does not have the most generous benefits system, the UK does not receive the most asylum seekers (far, far from it) and asylum seeker do not qualify for benefits when they arrive anyway. Most refugees do stop in the first safe country they set foot in, but to refuse to do our bit simply because we're an island or because our immediate neighbours aren't total cvnts seems fairly unsporting.
