A good business will factor loss of a percentage of products to shoplifting and damage into their business plan and cover it/reduce/mitigate the risk appropriately anyway.
Albeit that's much easier for larger stores to do than small independents but shoplifting isn't a new phenomenon or an unknown risk.

Many who resort to violence are not good enough to factor that in
Some too quick to dismiss this woman as "thieving s<umbag", or similar. Having actually read the articles, but without the benefit of video covering the preamble, my take on it is more along the lines of:
Woman: "I bought this but no longer want it, I'd like a refund"
Shopkeeper: "We don't do refunds, you can exchange it or get store credit."
Woman: "I want my money back"
Shopkeeper: <repeats>
Tension rises, people get all cross and that.
Woman: "Well, in that case I'll take this, this and this"
Shopkeeper: "That is worth more than your original purchase"
Woman: "Whatever"
...and roll video.
Yes, an unfortunate incident no doubt with abusive language going both ways escalating to what we've seen - but not really a shop-lifting or a "thieving s<um" story, for me. More a "my god, people don't half overreact these days" story. I also think the colour of those involved is entirely irrelevant to the incident itself, but it is central to why we know about the story at all.

In the past the Police actually took such thefts seriously with cuts to police numbers the response is either not the same or not at all. Small business owners, rightly or wrongly, are retaliating. Sign of a broken society all round.
Are we saying that we need to do more to ensure that the poor are not in the position to need to steal?

I know many off sales here (faced with a spat of thefts) starting using mag-lock type security doors. So customer's had to buzz in and out, with the retailer having sole control over the door operation.
And with the added protection of CCTV cameras, alcohol thefts reduced significantly.

If I was the shopkeeper would I retaliate,? yes. Definitely, if I see my shop beginning ransacked daily, the one I tackle would have drawn the short straw. Very unfortunate but that's what happens.

Are we saying that we need to do more to ensure that the poor are not in the position to need to steal?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That is the role of a good society with an effective government
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And how do the left propose to do that? We on the right have already come up with the best solution of violence towards them once they have committed the theft

I said the methods he used were legally permitted in the circumstances. the police investigated and he wasnt charged.
Iv asked why you thought he was OTT?
----------------------------------------------------------
I thought it was ott because I have NEVER heard of the legal restraining technique where you grab people around their necks and throw them around, have you?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He most definitely did it without thought, that what happens when you get physical. I bet you have never got physical with anyone.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
of course i haven't, clearly, i'm not a hard man like yourself
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not a hard man, I'm not a softie either, point I'm trying to make is getting physical is irrational. By doing so the shopkeeper lost control of his ability to think clearly. He was in fight mode.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And in reality, he shouldn't have gone to fight mode and lose complete control of his actions over an item in his shop, self control is a thing.
1000's of people are in prison because they lose control completely and go way overboard, like he did, (not saying he tried to kill her)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, neither should have done what they did.
If I was the shopkeeper would I retaliate,? yes. Definitely, if I see my shop beginning ransacked daily, the one I tackle would have drawn the short straw. Very unfortunate but that's what happens.
