Minute silence for the victims of the terrorist attack - absolutely.
Showing support for a particular “side” in what is a hugely complex situation - no thank you.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
a minute silence on what day? Saturday? That'll do good.

I agree with it. They need to scale back this constant demand to use sport - particularly football - as a platform for political or societal comment. Do it for one and you have to do it for all or face criticism or scrutiny, and who decides whose cause is worthier.

There are other places for this kind of things.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Maybe, but is this the time to decide they won’t do it any longer? I don’t think so.

Would we really be saying don’t do it if it was France, the US or Sweden who had suffered such an attack?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Comparing the context of a terrorist attack on Sweden with the political situation and context of Israel and Palestine; apples and bowling balls.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I agree.

Let’s compare a terrorist attack with a terrorist attack.

We would show solidarity with Sweden or France. Why not Israel?

I would, yes.

Also, my understanding is they’ll be having a minutes silence for all innocent victims on both sides, rather than lighting the arch in one sides colours. Clearly they are looking to avoid publicly taking sides in what is a complex situation.

Fancy arguing over whether the Wembley Arch should be lit up, whilst women, children and babies are being killed in both Israel and Gaza.

The World really is in a bad place right now, if lighting up an arch at a football stadium can cause division.

Quite right. If the FA are asked in the coming weeks to light up in the Palestinian colours for the thousands of innocent civilians that will sadly lose their lives, it's not about supporting Hamas or even Palestine - it's quite rightly about innocent lives lost.

This is all members of the Jewish comnunity are requesting of the FA

But you and I both know, that attacks and killing of Palestinians has been going on in large numbers for years. You’ll have seen the relative ratios. I don’t remember the arch being lit up any time a housing block was destroyed? We also all know, full well, that the anticipated response from the Israeli defence force will not lead to the Wembley arch being lit up in the colours of the Palestinian flag.

I think on balance it's the right thing to do. And I do think this is more complex than other examples cited.

Ukraine: invaded by Russia in an explicitly colonial venture. There is no reasonable argument that Ukraine's resistance to being a satellite state of of Russia justified the brutal invasion or made the moral equation 'complex'.

Bataclan attack: terrorists murdered innocent civilians. The French state is open to criticism, but at the time of the gestures of solidarity, it wasn't doing the same.

Israel: there's absolutely no moral ambiguity in condemning the hideous actions of Hamas and we should all have total sympathy and solidarity with their victims. That's not morally complex. Equally, we should have sympathy and solidarity with the innocent civilians and children in Gaza who are dying as whole neighbourhoods are wiped out. We must condemn collective punishment as justification for murder of civilians, whether it's Hamas doing it at close range, looking innocent people in the eye, or a well armed state doing it from a distance. So from the FA's point of view, the complexity comes from how a simple gesture like lighting up the arch is read. How can you ensure it is understood as purely a message of solidarity to the Israeli victims, and not a message of support to the Israeli state for the mass civilian killing it is at this very moment unleashing? And if you express sympathy with the innocent Israeli dead only, is it implicit that you don't have sympathy for the innocent Palestinian dead?

Are you comparing the context of Charlie Hebdo printing cartoons to the multiple human rights violations perpetrated by the Israeli defence force in Gaza?

It goes without says, but given this is a different thread, the terrorist attacking by Hamas on innocent people is absolutely abhorrent and I condemn it in the strongest possible terms.

I'm simply pointing out that if you are genuinely able to look beyond allegiances / affiliations when it comes to what's happening in Israel right now, then you should be able to when it comes to rival fans.

dont get me wrong your still a bograt !!

but never in my life have I heard about someone or some people losing their lives and waited to hear what religion they are, where in the world they happened to be born, what team they support as any factor as to how Im gonna feel about it.

People are people, one innocent live is not worth anymore than another.
