He perhaps thought that following SAF was going to be really difficult so, wisely, opted for elsewhere. We should have wooed him after Moyes though IMO.

Plausible.
Or that we're a mess without a DoF?

We need to do a bit of soul searching and look backwards at what made us good, my pick with that in mind would be Elo Reajkslos.

Sounds like someone who should be working at Sniltub.

He's the Sporting manager. Very very talented coach. Play great football and that club has worked wonders at unearthing talent of late.
They knocked out Arsenal of the Europa and looked very impressive.
Again it won't matter though unless we change everything else too.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So an up and coming coach from a weak league. Hmm
As talented as Eth was Ajax?;
I'll pass and persevere with ETH, thanks all the same mate!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pretty much yeah. π

π
You are wumming me now!
You'll be calling for his head in 18 months time and say you wanted Eth all along π
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I did want ETH above Amorim. Both on my list but ETH was top. Won't deny it. I have been disappointed with him. The style of play wasn't there last year either. We had a solid defence and Rashford on fire. The patterns never came and still haven't.
We can't keep losing games. You say stick with ETH....will you still be saying that if we win 1 of our next 7/8 games which could easily happen? What then?
It feels like the end to me.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pep's a clever guy and I don't think he'd have left a stone unturned in researching possibly taking the job. I'm sure the lack of structure would have worried him though and that's why he didn't take it on. Losing Gill at the same time was massive IMO.
In his heart of hearts though I'm sure there's a part of him that would have loved to have managed United.
Amorim is a fantastic young coach who plays attractive football. But the same was true of Erik, you're quite right.
------------------------------------------
I wouldn't say his football is that attractive. It's proactive in certain situations but his football has been largely based on having a sound defence and off-ball structure which has been the hallmark of Sporting's success under him.
It's a far cry really from Ten Hag's football at Ajax.
Saying that though, a better drilled side would be better to watch than what we've again become used to.
It sounds like one more bad result may be all it takes. I'd be gobsmacked if he's still here after Newcastle but I'd be surprised if he's still manager in the next two or three weeks barring an incredible turnaround.

He has a legacy at City, doubt very much he would risk it all by crossing the bitter divide. We had our chance, it was a no then, he won't even entertain the thought now.
Here's a thought, Eth needs different voices other than Steve McClaren around him?

Ultimately I'm just disappointed that the guy I wanted in ETH has made too many bad decisions. He's brought a lot of this on himself. Refused Rangnick being a consultant and insisted on likes of Antony. He gets less and less sympathy every passing game.
He lost a lot of the fans last night too. Loads have had enough coming off the ground. The end is nigh.

Sorry,
I just don't understand all this moaning regarding Ten Hag ???
Yes results have been poor but........
Based on a minimum of 50 games (United Managers of all time) for comparison - Ten Hag has the best win ratio EVER !!!!
I watched Sporting beat Arsenal in the Europa League and the quality of their football was absolutely ridiculous. They were a joy to watch and as good as anything ETH's Ajax did for me.
----------------------------------------------
How did I know you were going to mention that game.
I've watched enough of Sporting in both Europe and league to see the type of football they play under Amorim and I'm not saying it's bad, it's just not that great on the whole for a dominant team in the league.
The board are so dumb and haven’t learnt from their previous mistakes, once again they’ve given the full power to the manager to buy what he wants, one decent but not great season and they’re like, you know what sign who you want. This season’s transfer window has to be up there as the worst one. And we’ve had done shockers in the past 10 years.

EtH's Ajax side didn't play too bad either, if I remember correctly... Alas...
None of that matters if you can't deal with the pressure and ineptitude that surrounds this football club...

Possibly
Injuries to Martinez and Shaw in particular has screwed him over, Casemiro's form has literally dropped off the cliff. This affected our ability to play out the back and attack down they flanks, especially down the left Shaw used to provide. We are so easy to play against all over the pitch. Confidence is at an all time low.
Last night 3 individual errors led to 3 goals (2 by the same fecking player). Individual errors have been the hallmark of every regime post SAF, what guarantees do we have the new guy won't experience the same? They simply will.
Unless we are rooted to the bottom, I would give Eth until the summer to get it right and then reassess.

That's why morality or no morality I was so keen on Sheikh Jassim's takeover plan. It would have meant a clean separation from the Glazers who have simply ruined the football club.

Injuries have been cruel. There's no denying it. Newcastle had more out than we did though. In fact I'd say their line up was arguably weaker than ours.
The defence being out doesn't mean the entire attack should look poor though. When we get the ball the defending phase is over and out attackers look like strangers.
We also have spent £415m under him. Most of that money is hard to see when you watch us play.
He's losing sympathy each game that passes.

Pep should take this job, big chance for him to prove himself as the best manager in history
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He refused SAF's advances to replace him why would he say yes to Murtough and co?!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He perhaps thought that following SAF was going to be really difficult so, wisely, opted for elsewhere. We should have wooed him after Moyes though IMO.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Plausible.
Or that we're a mess without a DoF?
I am sure Pep would credit Txiki Begiristain for his success as coach. He recently stated the Dof, coach and chairman think alike, it's more than just the guy who trains and picks the team.

We need to do a bit of soul searching and look backwards at what made us good, my pick with that in mind would be Elo Reajkslos.

Hmm
As talented as Eth was Ajax?;
I'll pass and persevere with ETH, thanks all the same mate!

So repeat, rinse, repeat is what you want in the hope it sticks? Short termism over long termism. Aren't impatient fans like you part of the problem?
This deja-vu moment will rear it's ugly face at some point in the near future.

No that's fair enough. I have said more than anyone that sacking managers without changes above don't work. I'm going off the premise that we are going to replace Murtough though as the rumours have suggested.
I don't want to see you flip flopping though if we lose the next few games and are out of everything. π
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Flip flop? No chance.
Until we make the serious changes at the sporting operation level then we are setting up every manager to fail like we have been doing since SAF retired. We seriously need to learn from history because money alone is not enough, we are a classic example of that. Name me one football club who neglects their football and survives? It's just bonkers.

The players have given up on him. When that happens we'd be lucky to win a handful of our next 10 games.
When's your cut off point?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Injuries have been cruel.
