I have a treadmill in the garage, unused for about 2 years. One of those with Netflix, YouTube etc on it, what a gimmick.
But I am so unfit and have decided that come 2024 I'm gonna do the 5k thing and start to use it on a proper schedule and quit vaping.
Fair play for your motivation mate, il be joining you in a few months. Well, playing catch up definitely.
Yesterday I think I jogged 1k in about 10 minutes. Definitely need to get active again...

Good luck with that Bake 'em. It does take some time to be able to get your stamina up, but well worth it.
Worth considering whether this would work for you:

I don't jog or run these days. But I still try to do a country walk once a week over varying terrain. I find it keeps me reasonably fit for a 74 year old.

10 miles is a very good effort. Well done.
I hate exercise for exercise sake, so have never been good at getting myself out jogging or using weights etc on a regular basis
But back in the summer I injured my knee playing footy and 6 months later its pain free so just getting back to a bit of exercise. Cycling mainly but have to get some jogging in to get myself used to running before I get back to playing football again. Currently i cannot even jog for more than about 1km without stopping, it's embarrassing. But even at my best, when able to do 3-4 hour cycle rides, if i ever ran 5km i would not be quicker than about 27m.
Im 50 now, so i have to take it easy when getting back into it because im the sort of guy who goes full tilt when exercising/playing sport, and suddenly im a bit more conscious of my age and that going from zero to a big effort is probably not advisable.

for your age those times are pretty decent and defo above average. I dont really run anymore as my knees are truly goosed now.
but when I was younger and at my fittest I was around the 19-20 mins mark. Never really focused on the running however at any point. But I used to do Park run and at my best I was in that range
If you're doing that outside, you can shave off a minute or two from your record if you're adapting the times for a treadmill. It's much harder outside as you have to battle wind and a more undulating course. Your fitness will be much higher for doing it outside. You should give it a go on a treadmill to see what kind of time you can pull off.
22.30 for a 50 year old is decent. Keep it up and try to get as near to that 20 min barrier. Go on park runs because they'll provide you with a pacer which will definitely increase your speed.
Well done, used to love 5k’s but I caught the running bug big time - and now do 12k 4 or 5 times a week. I was finding I was getting slower at 5k but my stamina was getting better and better and so I just started running for longer.
It consistently takes me between 59 and 61 mins to do 12k - I won’t do more than that as 4 or 5 hours of running over a week is a ridiculous amount of time and you can easily injure yourself.
I’ve got a mate who does ultras - his wife goes faaaacking mental at him when he is training as he will take off at 8am on a Saturday morning and she won’t see him again until about 4pm and then all he wants to do is eat and sleep
My 5k times to answer your question we’re always around 22/23 mins - never particularly fast

That's superb to have been down there.
My nephew's an officer in the Royal Marines (he's 23 I think now) and I think he said he did about 18 minutes (can't remember tbh but think it was something like that).
I find it completely incomprehensible to do times under 20 minutes
