And yes... Waggy was their most effective defender.
Didn't see today's game of course but in these sorts of games the second goal makes such a massive difference. Failing to kill off Shrewsbury and Charlton where they were their for the taking cost us 5 points. There are some teams who can look comfortable at one-nil but we are not amongst them.
As soon as we went 3 up I wanted to see CBT given maximum game time. Instead we get Waggy!
I have resigned myself to just hoping we can scrape a 1-0, anything else is a bonus. We don’t play football and we struggle to dominate games, we can’t catch a break as when we win all those around us win, when those around us lose we ‘do a Derby’ and lose to a team that hasn’t won in 20.Thankfully Port Vale are absolutely gash as 3-0 has at least helped our goal difference.
If this is what it takes to get out of this division then so be it but I just feel that if they just worked all week on passing to each other, we’d be where Pompey are right now.
Clearly our front line has struggled for obvious reasons... but hopefully players will be coming back to full fitness in next 3/4 weeks.
I really don't see too much wrong with the back line...generally... but I do feel we surrender midfield from time to time and Adams can't run it all on his own. So I'm not sure quite what we do. I agree that Bird will be better at a higher level but feel like Hourihane he disappears at times ...when he's on song we function better. I also agree that CBT needs more game time now ... but also feel that Tommo and Fornah do too... but I guess we can't accommodate everyone.
A real positive yesterday was Ward as he seemed to have disappeared in recent weeks. Equally Sibs and the forward line in general benefitted from his performance.
So, a positive performance yesterday but a times we switch off which gives the opposition hope... and we have to get out of the bad habit.
A tough game ... again coming up next week against a side with plenty to play for...
Some really good analysis from the always reliable Chicago ( with his weekly views, always appreciated) also from Tommo and Terry just to name a few. Thanks to our own reporter from the game Ang for his input on players performances.
Having watched the highlights last night Ward was certainly a player possessed to correct some of his recent mistakes. Great to see and I can understand from that brief highlight reel why he'd be considered as MOTM.
Lovely deft flick of a header from Gayle (at 5 foot) to connect with that delicious ball from Adams over taller players is certainly a reflection of what a lot of the users on the MT have been saying lately. Gayle gets in the right places and his movement is intelligent. Getting assists from central players is great to see as opposed to passing it the winger and whipping it in time and again.
Whilst Nyambe is out for the foreseeable future its down to Ward to cement this position as his with Smith ideally battling him for RB or RWB. I don't think Wilson should be utilised in this role and given a 'licence to attack' as a winger instead. I think he enjoys that just a little more too.
We need to win 4/5 games left in March, draws now will be the same as a defeat. The Bolton game the only match in which a draw would be deemed acceptable. A tall ask, 13 points out of 15 to keep the automatic hunt alive.
Bolton's next six games in March:
Barnsley (a)
Exeter (a)
Oxford (h)
Derby (a)
Shrewsbury(a)
Stevenage (a)
Minus the Barnsley & Derby game, based on current form I can't see them dropping too many points.
Barnsley's fixtures:
Bolton (h)
Lincoln (a)
Carlisle (a)
Cheltenham (h)
Portsmouth (a)
Cambridge (h)
Cheltenham will be battling hard for survival so that could be difficult game as would the match versus Pompey otherwise you'd expect the Tykes to will the others.
It's going go to the wire unless Bolton and Barnsley have a serious drop in form during March/April.

Gotta rally the troops to 300 before the long march to 400, Fin.

Thank you Desi. Exciting times! đ
Many thanks Desi for all your recent posts on this thread, esp giving rivals' remaining fixtures and linking to that super goal by Brown for Gateshead. What a cracker!
Looks like the marmite managers are joining L1 sides. After Nathan Jones' appointment at Charlton, Cambridge United have appointed Gary Monk. I followed his managerial progress with interest at Swansea. From Middlesbrough onwards his reputation appeared to have taken a severe hit due to background meddling/interference which followed him at Birmingham and Sheffield Weds.
With Cambridge due to play Bolton a d Barnsley here's hoping he can have a positive impact. We're also due to play Cambs but towards the end of the season so hopefully the new managerial bounce will have worn off by then.
Sheffield United are the first side in English league football to lose three consecutive home league games by at least a five-goal margin. It is also the fourth time this season that the Blades have lost a home Premier League match by at least five goals, becoming the first side in a top-flight season to do so.
We don’t hold ALL the records …
Wonder what the odds are on them not getting a single point from their remaining fixtures?

From the TV live feed & replays it looked to me as it was going wide of the goal, plus I feel very confident it was right having been backed up by the esteemed Scouse who very rarely gets anything wrong....
