Wolves v Newcastle Match Thread

Hadn’t realised how many score draws there’s been in games between these teams. We’ve played Newcastle 19 times in the Premier League. 2 of them ended 2-2 and 9 of them finished 1-1. Put this one down on the pools (does anybody do the pools nowadays?)

I fear this match will have come a day too soon in our recovery, following the exertions of Wednesday.

Would take a point now in a heartbeat 💗

I was disappointed we didn’t sign a centre forward in January as I think most Wolves fans were, not everyone though.

In his press conference today GON said he was desperate to bring one in but it didn’t happen. He felt that was the position where we have the least cover if something happened, and now something has, with Cunha and Hwang both now injured. He said the team have coped well without one of our front men, but this is the first time we’ve had two out.

He had said in the week that he didn’t know who he would pick for centre forward tomorrow and he confessed today he still hasn’t decided on his selection. Suppose Bellegarde is the likely replacement for Hwang although Fraser is a possible. Alternatively we could pick Lemina, Gomes and Doyle and leave Sarabia and Neto as the only natural forwards. But difficult to see where the goals come from in that line up. Although I guess Sarabia and Lemina have been our scorers in the last two games.

I'm not disappointed we didn't sign a forward in January. It made sense from an FFP point of view and I'd rather we didn't gamble on that.

It's disappointing we loaned out our two back up options though. Im sure we'd all feel a lot better about this weekend if we had Silva or Sasa around (assuming Sasa stayed fit if he stayed).

I would play Doyle behind Neto and Sarabia. Mainly cause Bellegarde continues to frustrate

Bellegarde looks his best when he starts wider. He keeps getting played out of position though. He certainly isn't a forward.

I think he is one of those players who needs time to settle and eventually get a run of games in his actual position before we fully judge him.

Baggies beat Cov 2-1 so logically we should beat Cov.

That's logic though not football.

Coventry didn’t seem to have much to offer from what I saw and only losing 2-1 flattered then I think

Not signing a centre forward in January had nothing to do with ffp. Clubs are currently being assessed for the 3 financial years ending June 23. We are in a stronger position for the years ending June 24 especially as the sale of Nunes for £53m falls into that period

Well you'll have to argue that with Gary O'Neil then.

He seems to think that we couldn't afford the fees due to it putting us in a precarious position with FFP.

Wolves had agreed a deal with Flamengo and s player at the end of January only for the players agent to ask for an additional payment after everything had been agreed. So Wolves pulled out. Can’t believe we would have agreed a deal we couldn’t afford to complete

Joao Gomes has been called up to the Brazil national team for the first time for games that includes playing England at Wembley

Well if you read the interview with GON, he says we could afford wages but not the fees. That was why we couldn't loan Broja due to the fee. Yuri Alberto was a loan with a buy clause which would have triggered after the June 30th deadline for this season's FFP figures. The agent adding extra fees all payable this season (you cannot amortised loan fees) probably put us close to or over the FFP line for 23/24.

We need to make a profit in the period running up to 30th June 2024 as we made a £44 million loss in 21/22 and an estimated £70 million+ loss in 22/23. Cunha's transfer fell into this season and Nunes's sale made limited profit as we still had £30 odd million amortised across his contract to write off. So whilst we may be below the line now, we are still close and fees payable in the current reporting period may take us over. Next season we should be clear of it as we will have the £44 million loss taken out of the reporting period, so we will just have the £70 million loss and a profit.

It's well known that FFP is a problem for us this season. It's the reason we had the summer transfer window we did and the reason we had the problems with Lopetegui. Not sure why you feel the need to pretend otherwise. Maybe you know more than O'Neil and the club?

If we could afford to sign a striker, it just makes it doubly stupid and incompetent that we didn’t then.

I don’t think we’ve got a chance of maintaining current level of performance and results without some degree of “burnout”.

Got to hope we don’t pick up anymore injuries 🙏

The sale of Nunes brought in £53m. That gave us a profit on his transfer fees and meant we don’t have to amortise the remainder of his contract. So compared to the budget we had for 23/24 it’s a profit. There is actually some deduction from the £53m due to a sell on clause with Porto but the deal still makes us millions better off in 23/24 than if we hadn’t sold him

So limited profit like I said then?

posted on 2/3/24

The big profit transfer of the summer was Neves. That's the main one that has helped us make the profit this season for FFP. Due to the Nunes sale we signed Santi Bueno, Jean Ricner-Bellegarde and Enso Gonzalez, so the limited profit we made on Nunes is probably already spent.

posted on 2/3/24

The reason the neves sale was key to ffp was that it fell in the last financial year whereas Nunes was in this financial year. The money we received for Nunes made the club tens of millions better off than if they hadn’t sold him. So yes you are correct it was a limited amount just as every transfer ever made is a limited amount

Settle for a draw today.
Will be tough though.
1-1.

It will be tough today particularly because of our lack of strikers. Also Newcastle will be desperate for a win. They haven’t won at home since December 16th and that’s included games against Luton, Forest and Bournemouth

Of course, but some are more limited than others. You keep mentioning £54 million for Nunes, but the book value will be much less.

I mention £53m because that was the reported value of the transfer fee. The financial plan for 23/24 would not have included an amount for his transfer because they didn’t know it was going to happen. But it would have included a cost amount for the value of the amortisation of his contract. I don’t know what the total benefit in 23/24 would be but it will have been significant. Can’t see it being less than £30m, maybe as much as £40m. Not to mention the saving on amortisation in 24/25
