I think that a lot of people are forgetting, wilfully or not, that there are a mountain of issues at the club.

Moyes failed
LVG failed
Jose failed
Ole failed

Interims failed

Yet everyone points to the manager when it all goes to pot.

At the end of last season, things were looking positive. We won a cup and got back into the CL places. We should have kicked on from there but a perfect storm (including mistakes from ETH) has led to an absolute sheeet show of a season ending with us beating our City rivals and putting in a great performance & winning the FA Cup.

I think that there is sufficient success and mitigation to allow for a third year. I’ve always said that three years is a much fairer amount of time for management.

When were we in the CL places?

Ah ok last season. Confusing. Not this last season. Last last season

There are arguments either way really.

What is swaying me a bit is that Ineos may not want the headache of replacing the manager now. It'd put their choice under a lot of pressure at the start of the new season whilst they're sorting other stuff too. If we start poorly with ETH then that's their scapegoat and buys them a bit of time.

Does the club even need to announce the manager is staying on anyway? They probably will , of course, but I suppose they don't have to respond to every rumour going..

People seem to forget how awful we’ve been and magically think after two years Ten Hag has any sort of plan other than park the bus in the big games.

"The way we beat City was no masterclass either."

What a load of rubbish, it's no coincidence we had an almost full squad and suddenly we played well.

Yes, it was a low block, but you can't argue we didn't execute a plan very well.

If you can't objectively give ETH credit for that performance then what's the point?

Not very good at parking said bus if we’ve conceded the 2nd most shots in Europe’s top 5 leagues

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, parking the bus in the big games. Our tactics against City, Arsenal and Liverpool have been to sit back, absorb pressure and counter attack. It’s worked to various levels over the season and worked at its very best in the final and as a plan executed ETH very much deserves credit.

However it’s not really those games that have made ETH outers wonder if he’s good enough. It’s in the many games against smaller sides where we don’t just struggle to break down our opposition but we leave monstrous gaps in the midfield for anyone from Spurs to Sheffield United to run through unabated.

Let’s put it this way - we played very well against Liverpool to beat them in the cup. Did we push on? Nope, we didn’t win any of our next 5 games. Had the season kept going I’m fairly certain we’d have had the same issues despite our win over City.

Ten Hag doesn’t seem to have any plan of action to fix the issues. What is he going to do with one more season? Buy more players? His record is awful. Set us up better in the smaller games? Based on what?

I am not in particularly a fan of ETH, but he just won the FA Cup final by not parking the bus.

You must have confused letting a superior team have possession in a certain part of the pitch with parking the bus.

We most certainly did park the bus. It was just Oleball brought back from the dead.

Park the bus, counter to pace up front and hope we get a bit of luck.

We had 26% possession and parked the bus and broke. It’s a very good tactic to use against City and Ten Hag deserves credit for pulling it off but it really was a pretty standard tactic to use.

Spot on. Watch our wins from 2019-2021 under Ole vs Pep's City and it was just the exact same performance.

We parked the bus and played like some pathetic League 1 side against EPL opposition. Got our bit of luck and did deserve to win, but again it's not good enough or sustainable if we want to win the EPL or UCL.

Ten Hag out.

Sure I read that somewhere

Yes he’s had a lot of $hit to deal with and chronic defensive injuries but finishing bottom of a relatively easy CL group coupled with 14 PL defeats is the reason I’ll think they’ll let him go

It was far more technical than that. To the point where even Pep admitted that he got the tactics wrong, what he means is that ETH set up to play a certain way against their usual and also set us up against the adjustments that they would make.

Only in the second half when Doku came on were they particularly dangerous and it was ‘HEARTBURN HEARTBURN’

Is it not the case that the vast majority of teams will try a similar tactic against City, because City control the ball so well. Then it's a case of how well you implement that tactic, make the most of your own opportunities, and have bit of luck also. We implemented the tactic well and things went for us.

But more often than not, just simply because of how good City are, they usually overcome any tactic you try against them - hence why they have been winning title after title.

But in knock-out football, one-off results can happen, and that's what we got. Credit for it, but the right tactics won't always overcome a superior opposition

According to Gary Nev... City players had been on the pizz up until Wednesday, after winning the League last weekend.

posted on 28/5/24

Just to be clear here - I’m genuinely not bagging out Ten Hag for using that tactic, I’d be even more Ten Hag out if he didn’t do it. It was the right thing to do and even if we’d have lost I’d still have commended him for playing that way with the players we have.

My issue isn’t the cup final at all. As Kinsang said, in knock out football anything can happen and you have to set up correctly. It doesn’t change how badly we set up in other games though.

Hands up anyone who thinks having Varane and Licha back had a lot to do with it.

We won the two previous league games doing the same

Hands up the ones who think Erik is a moron, clueless, idiot, terms often used to describe him.

Who is confident, 100% sure the next manager from the candidates is better.

Who has read, often, our training sessions are too severe.
Who thinks we rush players back after injury.

Bad buys and prices. First off I don't think the manager is culpable for the prices paid.

Buys. Antony terrible, and down to Erik.
Onana, jury out.
Martinez and Hojlund good.
Mount, who knows.

Players behind him, yes apparently.

Reasons for the year. Losing Greenwood and Sancho.
The terrible injury list. Not down to Erik.

Poor management from above, or any in fact

Voilà, my feelings for keeping Erik, for another season, and why not, there will still be people queuing up for the job if it doesn't work.
Final reason. We would win another trophy 👍

If that is what you think you saw, then we will have to agree to disagree Robbsie.

I saw pretty much the same thing nearly all the tactical analysts came up with after the match.

We had 11 shots overall, 5 of them on target. That is not parking the bus no matter how you try to spin it.

I have no issue with anyone having a different view, but there needs to be some consistency to that view?

So Martinez and Varane played key roles in the final, but Varane didn't play in the previous 2 games and Martinez played about 60 mins in the final league game, so surely it's the overall tactics being implemented which is just as key as the personnel (as in when talking about injuries etc)

I personally don't think ETH has been an idiot, but just a bit slow on the uptake in implementing any tactical changes and continuing with the crazy kamikaze midfield tactics for most of the season.

I think anything related to hard training sessions and rushing players back isn't valid (so agree with you).

Agree than transfer fees aren't his issue, but Antony was terrible, Onana questionable, Martinez should be good but needs to be injury free, Hojlund should be good but needed support.

The players may say they are behind him, but a lot of the season's performances don't seem to support that, or is that due to ETH unable to get the players to carry out his instructions? (which goes back to midfield issues etc)

You don't really know what Greenwood would have done for us, but mentioning Sancho seems to be stretching it a bit.

You also don't know for sure that ETH will win another trophy.

It's reasonable to have a view that ETH should go.

A good response. The fact is, I and the keep ETH in brigade may be wrong.
Also the ETH brigade may be right.
En fin, for me it's mainly a matter of fairness, he's won a trophy both years, the last, thrillingly, on Saturday.
And we have a new set up coming in, so we can judge more easily if it makes a difference.
And there will still be other managers who want the job next year.
