I think we should keep him as backup to someone better to be honest.
He's not great, but he's a decent backup to be fair.

I like AWB's defensive qualities, but less of his offensive attributes. For a modern full operating in a back 4 going past the half line, crossing, creating and chipping in with goals are very important in the final 3rd too.

Whoever comes in may not have AWBs defensive qualities but they are more than likely to offer far, far more going forwards. Finance dictates unfortunately otherwise I would definitely retain him as back up.

The sad thing is he's been at the club for a while but hasn't improved season in season out.

Bisakka? The Bayern guy is the one who didn’t want to go there and is waiting for us to make a move.

I like him. Gives 100%, loves the club. Great one on one defender, improving going forward. I don't think of him as deadwood.
None Sancho !!

He's out of contract next summer. Keeping him means we lose him for nothing and he certainly doesn't deserve a new deal.

Time to move on. He can't even get a call up for England squad and we are trying to get back to the top of the game. How will we achieve that with such limited players?

Just some of the deadwood far worse in their respective positions than AWB who we should be looking to ship out first

Surely given our leaky defence, we need a RB better at defending than attacking?

posted on 29/7/24

Yeah he needs replacing, but not with another injury prone full back. No one can look at Mazrouoi's injury record the last 2/3 seasons and not be worried.

posted on 29/7/24

If the overall level of our squad/team could keep the ball better in tight positions, move up the pitch better and recycle possession better we’d be attacked far less often and rely far less on brilliant 1v1 recovery tackles and last ditch tackles which is where AWB excels. He’s poor at most other things required of a full back now days.

Don’t know much about this other guy coming in so won’t comment on that.

People overrate AWB as a ‘defender’ because of his 1v1 tackling. He’s really poor at following his marker, defending at the back post and positioning a lot of the time, as well as his obvious failings going forward.

How is Mount deadwood? We’ve barely seen anything of him yet. He hasn’t played more than a handful of games in a row, and has looked our best player so far in preseason,

Not quite true. There's more aspects to defending than recoveries of which he is truly great at. His positioning is often atrocious and he falls asleep often.

He's out of contract next summer. What choice do we have? He's not good enough on the ball to play for us.

This summer seems to be about raising the floor of the squad rather than the ceiling, if that makes sense. Which with a lot of work to do and a relatively limited budget, is probably the right approach.

I've seen this argument going around that we should keep AWB because he gives us an alternative option to Dalot - in my mind that couldn't be further from the right approach. When AWB comes in for Dalot or Shaw, it fundamentally changes the way we build up play.

And this type of thing has been one of the biggest issues in the squad for the past decade. Fans and pundits alike pointed to the fact that a team like Brighton for example had defensive injuries last season but were able to maintain some semblance of a style of play - and they mostly did so to highlight a failure in coaching on United's part (which may be true to some extent). But it ignores the fact that Brighton are a tremendously well run football club, whose squad players are recruited specifically to able to come into the team without a major impact on how they play. Our squad players a mish-mash of failed experiments from previous regimes - AWB included.

I like AWB, seems a great pro and has his uses as a player for the right team. But it's time to start getting ruthless with this stuff - players who don't fit the direction we're going in need to be moved on ASAP if we're going to progress.

(Sorry that comment turned out longer than I'd planned).

I know. But there's far more to defending than that. He often falls asleep at the back post and he plays people onside a lot too.

And that's not even mentioning how incredibly poor he is on the ball. Don't we all want to progress as a team? I don't think he's good enough for a contract renewal so selling him makes sense to me.

I agree with Rosso, Mount has qualities, his role is not clearly defined in our team, that's not his fault. I still don't understand the signing tbf but he has heart, has work rate, has pressing qualities and if he can stay fit then could be a creative force.

As for the other so called deadwood, we can't undo the damage caused by successive transfers over many windows during one summer, we must be patient and show faith in a new structure which is impressing with the swift nature of its dealings. I admire the way they are quietly conducting business, often negotiating with more than one club / player / agent at the same time. We are also prepared to walk away from deals.

👏 - Great quote

Lunging recovery tackles are great for the camera shots, for the TV commentary, sometimes he mistimes and concedes a foul, a pen even. AWB makes recovery tackles often to atone for an error, for daydreaming and losing focus. Rarely seen him defend on the front foot.

posted on 29/7/24

If McTominay leaves as well this would be the best summer.

posted on 29/7/24

I wouldn't say AWB typically lunges in after making a positioning error. He tackles a lot because he's good at tackling. He tackles in positions where other players would just defend the space, because others don't have the same timing and telescopic legs. He's limited going forward, not a great passer of the ball, and has lapses in positioning defending crosses / switches of play. It's good if we can replace him with a player of a more suited profile and more rounded skill set. But he deserves the credit he gets as a one-on-one defender.
