There have been definite improvements in the squad, with hopefully a CM at least still to come. Then it is up to ETH to get them to gel and improve the playing side of things - then we will really see whether he has what it takes to get us anywhere near the side we want to be.

As I said on another thread, the more I move into the Old Fart phase of life, the less I fixate on the immediate competitiveness of the squad, and the more I'm engaged with the process of team building. As such, I'm really happy with the kinds of buys we've made, which seem on average younger than we've bought in the past, and with more of an eye on the precise profiles of players. I'm not too worried if we can't fill all of the gaps in the squad in one window, which would be challenging even without the legacy of budgetary restraints / players we struggle to shift bequeathed by the old regime.
I think the incoming players are a step in the right direction that won't solve all our issues. However, we can make substantial progress this season if ETH does a better job tactically and we don't have such a catastrophic experience with injuries.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Absolutely now whilst I'd love a one season turn around and us challenging for titles, cups I feel we should be looking at improving this year, do the same again next season and improve the squad with younger players who will develop over time and not short termism trying to get it all in one fell swoop
Fingers crossed that's started now

Ok with the CB signings - think we've definitely upgraded there and if Martinez can stay fit that will also be a massive improvement on last year.
Signing yet another injury prone full back in Mazraoui is bizarre to me, but we'll see how it goes I guess. If he spends half the season injured though - that's completely on whoever made the decision to sign him.
Zirkzee - exactly the profile of CF I felt we needed, we'll see if he actually has the quality to match I guess.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Agree with all of this.
Dalot seems to be relatively robust; but unless ETH sees Amass as ready to play plenty of PL football, we’re at serious risk of having to watch either him or Mazraoui play out of position at LB half of the season.

So who do we think will definitely leave this window, and what sort of cumulative sum do we think we'd get?
You'd think Sancho, Hannibal, Pellistri, Lindelof & maybe McTominay would be pretty safe bets for the "to shift" list.
£80-90m for the lot of them? Any acquisitions will ultimately rest on this.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Very, very difficult to say I think. But that isn’t necessarily a terrible thing.
Losing either of Sancho and Antony as well as Pellistri wouldn’t necessarily harm us at all, and has the potential to bring in useful funds (even if it’s just a loan fee for Antony).
If Mount can stay fit, again, losing both Hannibal and McT wouldn’t really hurt us.
Although we’ve wiped from the wage bill comfortably more than we’ll have added, moving one or both of Casemiro and Sancho on would take a big financial burden off. Looking for potential suitors for those two might be priorities.
What about ongoings, we need to clear the fridge and give room to some youngsters, as well as get cash for a couple more signings.
Lindelof
Pallistri
Gore
Hanibal ( regretably)
Sancho (please)
Eriksen
Casemiro (if another DM comes in).

We won't miss Mctominay's inability to control a midfield and keep possession but I do think we will miss him in both boxes. He's very good on defensive set pieces and obviously he's quite handy getting us goals from time to time.

I agree with you on the midfield. Hopefully we can move on at least 2 of Hannibal, Eriksen, McTominay and Casemiro.
Getting there, we all knew improving this squad was going to take a few years but we’ve bought very sensibly this summer although I am still a little worried about the fitness of the 2 lads from Bayern. Really hope it's not Sander Berge who we sign. He will just be the latest in a long line of players who aren't good enough to play for this club but we signed them anyway. Even for £20-25m it's not worth it. We need to sign more quality players and if they aren't available then don't waste the money on more dross causing more issues down the line.

If we go for Berge it’ll be to replace Amrabat I think. A stop gap until dealing with Casemiro’s replacement next summer.
Not what I’d do personally, but maybe there’s no Plan B for Ugarte right now.

Even as a stop gap it's too much. It's another 20-30m thrown away and probably 80-100k a week on a player we won't be able to shift.
As much as we need reinforcements, I'd rather give the minutes to one of the academy lads than waste more money on a player who isn't good enough as I said.
Sander Berge not in Burnley's squad tonight (Wout is though!) but some suggestion that he still has a knock and is missing because of injury.
