Sander Berge not in Burnley's squad tonight (Wout is though!) but some suggestion that he still has a knock and is missing because of injury.

Might be because some big team is dumb enough to spend money on him

Those Branthwaite stories aren't going away either.

Three CBs purchased would be a bit too much in some ways but perhaps it's a different set up ETH is going with eventually where we're strong and comfortable bringing the ball out from the back.

Don’t believe it, I think we’ll sign a CM and we’re done.

I doubt it too but wouldn't be too surprised either. Yoro, De Ligt, Martinez, Branthwaite would give us great options and I'm sure Yoro and Branthwaite would be used at FB at times too. Well nominally at FB anyway.

Centre halves being converted to full backs seems all the rage these days.

Really hope it's not Sander Berge who we sign. He will just be the latest in a long line of players who aren't good enough to play for this club but we signed them anyway. Even for £20-25m it's not worth it. We need to sign more quality players and if they aren't available then don't waste the money on more dross causing more issues down the line.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If we go for Berge it’ll be to replace Amrabat I think. A stop gap until dealing with Casemiro’s replacement next summer.

Not what I’d do personally, but maybe there’s no Plan B for Ugarte right now.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Even as a stop gap it's too much. It's another 20-30m thrown away and probably 80-100k a week on a player we won't be able to shift.

As much as we need reinforcements, I'd rather give the minutes to one of the academy lads than waste more money on a player who isn't good enough as I said.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Berge is 26 so it's not like he's only good for 2 seasons with no resale value. If he was around £20m, we wouldn't be much out of pocket. If he's used as a squad rotation player to give some others a rest or cover the inevitable injuries/suspensions.

So long as it’s a reasonable fee and we dont pay him so much we can’t ship him. I agree.

Our new recruitment team haven't had a lot of time to do anything yet. Probably why we have gone for two more former ETH players and a Dutch striker this window as they haven't had a great deal of time to do anything given how long it took for them to start.

I don't think our recruitment team have had much impact on this window lads. If they have recommended De Ligt and Mazraoui then that's a hell of a coincidence isn't it? Even Zirkzee who is Dutch and a former Bayern reserve player which is the exact same path as ETH.

I don't think we are going to truly benefit from Ashworth and his team until next summer. This one probably came too soon.

I doubt ETH's nationality had much to do with the signings (apart from convincing the player to join). Zirkzee is the profile of player we were looking for and De Lift is an experienced CB with a pretty low price tag. Given the lack of top CBs at the moment, a world class one will be ridiculous money.

If McTominay leaves and Berge comes in at roughly break even, then to me that represents an improvement to our CM options. McTominay isn't a proper CM player whereas Berge is; he's better in the air, a better passer, better receiving the ball deeper and a better ball carrier. I don't think anyone thinks Berge is a player that will take us to the next level, but we need good squad options and at the right price he seems like he could be just that.

He's at least a more tried and tested (and mobile) PL player than Amrabat and I think it's fair to say that with a run of games towards the end of the season (as well as a brief spell before Xmas that has been somewhat forgotten about) Amrabat showed some value to us. If we could find a squad option that offers an improvement on what Amrabat offered by spending no more than sale of a player like McTominary then I fail to see the problem.

I haven't seen anything like that myself but you could be right.

Personally though I think it's fairly obvious ETH retained a lot of input for this specific window. De Ligt and Mazraoui will be the 5th former players he's signed with a further few transfers of Dutch players such as Malacia, Weghorst (loan) and Zirkzee.

I don't think Ashworth and his team was in place early enough for this window myself which is why we've done what we've done.

He did. It was a recommendation put forward by the recruitment team.

It was also pretty clear that our first choice CB options were Branthwaite and Todibo - which surely lays to rest any ideas that ETH has the kind of sway over transfer decisions that he may have had previously (which, again I have to stress, was a club/structural issue, and not an ETH one. I know this will continue to be utterly lost on SE85 but I'm a glutton for punishment it seems).

Branthwaite and Todibo may well have been the first choice but for very different reasons we weren't able to get those done.

To land on De Ligt and Mazraoui is a hell of a coincidence I must say, especially after Lisandro, Antony and Onana have already joined.

Some would say you'd have to be an absolute moron to believe he's had no input here.
