The collective old deserve it for fooking it up for the young.

We fooked the economy for you lot then charged you extortionate rents, made housing unaffordable, now pay for us to stay warm.

Always take, take, take with the Oldies.

I reckon if they lay off the avocado toast they will have plenty of money.

Yeah let’s hope they all freeze to death this winter, that’ll teach them for paying tax for 45 years and raising the next generation

I love how ridiculous this country is. We take money away from old people and suddenly the rhetoric is hating old people

I think the Labour Party needs to publicly sort out the confusion between:

(a) on the one hand, the ‘need’ to remove the winter fuel subsidy, and penalising all pensioners not on pension credit, and,
(b) promising to increase the state pension next year ‘over and above the level of the winter fuel subsidy’, presumably for the benefit of all pensioners - i.e. not means tested.

The obvious question is Why? … Why seemingly take with one hand and give back with the other?

One logical answer is ‘political dogma’ … unless the Labour Party can explain otherwise.

I've paid tax for 30 odd years and raised the next generation, what do I get? Public services reduced year after year?

Harl, just curious. How would you generally define yourself politically right-leaning, centrist, centre-right, left-of-centre, and how has your position changed in recent years, if at all?

TBF, on that question alone I can see a smidge of sense in some minor efficiency savings though not a not a patch on abolishing NI and lumping it in with income tax. At one time I read there were 30,000 people employed administering NI across the country - no idea if true - but that could easily pay for the heating allowance or save another £1bn.

Same, raised 2 kids and now raising other peoples kids who can’t manage through fostering.

So like to think I’m contributing A little towards the heating when I’m old would be much appreciated.

I don’t think Labour realise how bad this looks and how much of a vote loser it will be come the next election.

It’s the kind of thing I would expect the tories to do.

They plan to pay for the increased pensions next year by killing off huge swathes of them this winter. Its in the manifesto.

Seriously though, while the policy makes sense you can see the headlines all winter long if its a cold one and old folk are freezing to death.

And some of those freezing pensioners will be bemoaning that a train driver gets a 15% pay rise to £69k while they're having to pisss their pants just for warmth

Starmer does present so much better that Rishi and with far more focus than bumbling Boris.

But his middle name is Rodney and i cannot look at him without thinking of that classic OF&H line -

This time next year Rodney, we'll......<insert your suggestion here>

have a million less pensioners to pay?

“The only impact assessment we’ve seen is the Labour party’s own impact assessment suggesting the policy would cause 3,850 deaths,” he said.

Labour research from 2017 claimed Tory plans to scrap the winter fuel payment for better-off pensioners could lead to almost 4,000 additional deaths over winter.

Not as bad as the Tories but still pretty bad.

Politics needs to be firmly separated from lobbying and big business, there has to be a better, cleaner way.

Different unions donated to something like 40% of the campaigns for Labour candidates in the last election.

No different to the tories, they were always going to bend over for unions.

The thing is they will all be at it now.
