"Beyond the political fray, the argument is nuanced - so the BBC spoke to pensioners to hear the full range of views. Some told us they rely on the payment for heating, while others said they spend the money on things like holidays, restaurants or their grandchildren."

This is why means testing is being introduced.

In conclusion Hector, I must say that Sir Keir does seem to have reverted to his original colours, time will tell of course but If I was a labour voter, I would be in a confused state at this moment in time !
----------------------------------------------------------------------
14 years of misrule isn't going to be corrected overnight and it's not going to be corrected without mistakes but ffs they've been in post for less than 3 months, the panty wetting is premature...imo.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So Starmer said ‘Pensioners have nothing to fear from me’, ‘Pensioners need protecting’ and then when the Tories muted that they may look at stopping the winter fuel allowance, Starmer got stuck into Sunak.

What’s the first thing Labour go and do! Then sanction substantial pay rises for the Junior Drs and train drivers, they even gave drivers who’ve left the job a handout!

----------------------------------------------------------------------
So you're angry that Starmer has done something the Tories you voted for would've done of they'd been elected. You obviously didn't care about pensioners when casting your vote, just your own pension. Your outrage looks a lot like hypocrisy.

Saying Starmer has taken from pensioners to give to train drivers and doctors is such base level tabloid logic.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Ooooh Annie! Just like night follows day, you follow me! 😃
Tories muted it who’s to say they’d of done it!

However back to my point Starmer was all about protecting pensioners and then who did they go after first?

Are you ignoring that?

The last 14 years says so

Starmer hasn't 'gone after' pensioners. Stop using emotive tabloid language and engage your brain, assuming there's something rattling around.

Your happy wasting working tax payers money on pensioners who put the WFP towards their next holiday or give it away to the grandkids?

"The vast majority of over-65s receive a state pension and it’s the main income for those who don’t get a private pension - which their former employer paid into. The state pension increases every year through the triple lock - in line with whichever is highest out of inflation, earnings or 2.5%.
This year it increased by £690 for people who reached retirement age before April 2016 and £900 for those after that date. Next year the increases are projected to be £353 and £460 respectively, driven by high inflation and energy costs."

If you read the link to the BBC article I posted earlier you'd know the answer.

Funny how the focus is on government subsidy and not on greedy energy suppliers quick to put prices up when they rise, slow to lower them when they go down. The same suppliers that declare billions in quarterly profits. Then again greed is good to your average Tory voter.

Your happy wasting working tax payers money on pensioners who put the WFP towards their next holiday or give it away to the grandkids?

No.answer to this?

Red

Put it this way, your pensioner who is £2 over the threshold for WFP. If their pension went up by £690pa last year and the government is taking the £300pa WFP away plus a further rise in pensions of between £353 & £460/for next year, is your pensioner out of pocket?

Typical non answer

Your hypothetical pensioner, £2 over the threshold, is better off given the £690 rise in state pension this year and £350 rise next year even if they miss out on £300 WFP.

Explain how Starmer has 'gone after' (stop reading tabloids and taking them seriously) pensioners of they are better off?

You're not really this thick

Another non answer, take it your happy with millions wasted on pensioners holidays, meals out and grandkids pocket money.

Then again you voted for the party that wasted billions on useless COVID PPE, hundreds of millions on Rwanda and who partied their way through a pandemic whilst the pensioners you supposedly care about died. The party you voted for doesn't tally with your sudden concern for pensioners, maybe you're just another disingenuous Tory rselicker.

Either way train driver salaries are decent for what is officially an unskilled job.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yet the Labour loving luvies will make any excuse for striking drivers because 40 plus percent of their MP’s had campaign contributions from the unions.

Like I said, no different to the tories.

Anger management saan, maybe get some help.

It’s not opinion, it’s a fact. 40 plus percent Labour candidates had donations from unions.

They then get elected and say there is a massive hole in finances but somehow manage to bow to union pressure and hand the highest paid train drivers in Europe a massive pay rise

But at the same time pensioners get screwed

Pensioners have nothing to fear from me’, ‘Pensioners need protecting’ and then when the Tories muted that they may look at stopping the winter fuel allowance, Starmer got stuck into Sunak.

posted on 16/9/24

I'm not sure I get this.

I haven't studied this in detail, but from what I gatjer, the government plan involves making what was previously the winter subsidy a part of the fixed amount all pensioners receive, thus converting it into a permanent part of their income. In addition, it would still add a subsidy for those who are worst off. It appears to me that this benefits all pensioners, albeit not all to the same extent.

However, this is somehow being construed by some as going against pensioners. Can those who hold this view clarify what I am getting wrong?

Restricting the fuel allowance to some pensioners will not be paying for a train drivers wage rise.

So your pensioner is better off then even with WFP taken away, good to know.

If appears you're more concerned with bleating 'but Starmer said before the election.....' and less concerned with pensioners. and WFP and pensions. You just want to play identity politics and your supposed concern is disingenuous at best.

690 + 350 - 300 = ?

It means those who previously received it, despite not needing it, won't have an extra £300 for the holiday kitty or grandkids pocket money.

All pensioners receive the triple lock rise in pensions. How many millions of pensioners are you talking.about specifically?

After the near £700 rise last year and minimum £350 rise next year are pensioners better or worse off NET even with the £300 WFP taken away?

Don't see workers guaranteed a yearly pay rise in line with inflation regardless of how much their utility bills go up.

The Triple Lock sounds great but it’s based on one of the lowest pension rates in Europe for people living in one of the most expensive countries in Europe

I also wonder how many people are missing out on the full pension through no fault of their own?

I’ve spoken to two people in the last week who aren’t receiving the full rate because their former employers didn’t pay their full NI contributions and have since gone out of business

"Millions of pensioners who aren't that well off'

"The issue of who needs the support is at the heart of the change to the WFP. Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures show that the proportion of wealthy over-65s has grown.
In 2010, 9% of this group lived in a household that had a total wealth – including assets like their home and pensions – above £1 million. Ten years later, this rose to 27%.
Liz Emerson, CEO of the Intergenerational Foundation, a charity that campaigns for youth-friendly government policy, says it is being fuelled by rising property values.
“Alongside that, they have more generous private pensions than young people,” she explains. “So when you combine housing wealth and pension wealth, older people have been doing far better than the younger generation over recent years.”
Yet this isn’t just about millionaires - many of those who say they do not need WFP, like those the BBC spoke to, are simply on healthy pensions after years of working.
Others are more wealthy, especially if they have sold high-value property and downsized to a house that is far less expensive to heat, ending up with leftover cash in the process.
For those who don't sell up, Ms Emerson asks: “Should these pensioners be subsidised by younger taxpayers to stay in a valuable home? It seems to us to be intergenerationally unfair.”

The question at the end of that paragraph is pertinent. We don't have enough working age people to subsidise the rising amount of people at pension age. Why should those of us working away subsidise those with private pensions or assets such as property?

I would add that by the time we reach pension age what provision, if any, will be available? Will state pensions still be a thing by then? Generations from my age down won't have housing as an asset to rely on.

Hypothetical’ it’s obviously not, its a fact written in black and white, obviously if you’d read your own link to the BBC article you’d of know that you clown !🤣

Again you choose to avoid my point.

So again Mr Cut and Paste, did Starmer say or do the following?

Pensioners have nothing to fear from me’, ‘Pensioners need protecting’ and then when the Tories muted that they may look at stopping the winter fuel allowance, Starmer got stuck into Sunak.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
So your pensioner is better off then even with WFP taken away, good to know.

If appears you're more concerned with bleating 'but Starmer said before the election.....' and less concerned with pensioners. and WFP and pensions. You just want to play identity politics and your supposed concern is disingenuous at best.

Then again you did vote for 5 more years of Tories so you don't care about pensioners at all

What’s the title of this article you imbecile!
FFS.. I knew you were stupid but that takes the biscuit!

You really do let your dislike and obsession of me blur your vision!

Oh yes I do have concerns for some of the pensioners!

Ah the usual 'you're obsessed' come back, the sign you've got no answer to the facts posted re WFP.

You.can't comprehend that someone says something then changes tack based on info that wasn't previously known, ie exactly how much the Tories you.voted for facked the economy

Mr "I voted Tory because of my pension" doesn't tally with your supposed concern for pensioners. Had the party you voted for won the election pensioners would be worse off.

Well done for showing us another topic you can't debate like an adult. Stay in your usual lane of 'bite', 'chomp' and 'you're obsessed'. Anything beyond this is clearly being your intellect.

Yet again you dodged questions and made yourself look stupid again with some of your comments, although none of them can match the Tommy feck up! 🤣

The Tories killed 43,000 pensioners during COVID with errors in social care being a huge cause, all while they tried to enrich their mates with PPE contracts, worth billions, and partied.

You still voted for them last July despite this, that's how much you care about pensioners. Bleat all you want about Starmer, given who you voted for it just sounds empty and disingenuous.

Wow! You really are being over dramatic here!

Can you link me in with the facts that the Tories actually killed 43,000 pensioners during COVID?
