You know what is interesting though with this new super league format, none of this actually matters. Can lose 100-0 against the good teams and still remain in the competition by beating the crap teams at home. Don't need to be the level of a pot 2 team in the old CL to not go out.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Which is why I prefer it. Also the fact you’re not just playing the same three teams twice and in our case, that’s it. Often with the last game or two being dead rubbers.

More variety and a chance to visit grounds you’ve never been to before. Far more watchable. Other than the ones where you just get battered silly, which was more likely in the old format anyway.

Working..... didn't see any of it thankfully..

Like I said earlier, can't believe anyone thought we could get anything with Taylor & Trusty, AJ & Scales as a back 4.I did think they might keep it respectable. Fvck sake.

Two positives.
Brilliant wum. Go down 5-1 by ht. get all the bears out of bed. Only to disappoint by keeping their record in tact.

I think around 25mins even Greg Taylor realised he wasn’t cut out for this. (Disclaimer: not convinced Valle is the answer).

What is this record you speak of.....as I genuinely don't know what you are talking about
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Had a few swallys. I thought it was worst score line ever … completely forgetting it was worst team/campaign ever. My apologies.

So glad I didn’t go and so glad I turned over at half time.

So glad I’m going nowhere near Atalanta or Villa either. Both look horrendous games.

My boys are desperate to go and they are welcome to the tickets.

Also saves me a few grand as well.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I was primed to message you if we got a result

I'm not now. I don't want a "told you so"

Villa away will be carnage. 50k hanging around Birmingham trying to find pubs to watch it in

Zagreb should be decent

BR … “We’ll learn from it, for sure”.

Will we, aye? Zero evidence for that.

Thing is, we’d all play a 4-5-1 with Idah up front (?) in hindsight BUT if we don’t do it in any other games all year I’m not sure it would make much difference? It’s all a bit hopeless imo

Europe's just a bonus. We didn't expect anything and we'd be very lucky to progress.

Brendan hasn't learned anything from his drubbings in thr Champs League. He wants to play against Dortmund the same way we play St. Johnstone - It's crazy.

He should've set us up to be hard to beat. It's all very well having a go, but a humiliation doesn't do any good, for anyone connected to the club.

I don’t think other than the elite clubs; that this Dortmund side will find it difficult to beat anyone else regardless of how they line up.

these results lie with the manager.

gordon strachan rocked up with gary caldwell, stephen mcmanus, paul hartley, and barry robson , and still got results in europe,

if you think you can just turn up and play your own way against these teams then you are a fvcking idiot, the gulf in quality is off the charts so you need to be realistic.

that left side is a massive problem, taylor just wanders off and scales needs to go out wide to cover bringing everyone else with him, and scales himself is guilty of pushing far too high.

CDM should drop in there, but thats where mcgregor falls short, a cdm thats poor defensively. Need to keep our shape and stop getting dragged in.

that high press was quite frankly ridiculous.

Been saying for years that effectively playing without a defensive midfielder is all very well domestically (for the most part), but becomes utterly laughable at CL level. Pep and every other top side needs one, but we don’t? Aye, OK.

Speaking of laughable, so is heading into the CL with Taylor and Scales as the first choice left side of our defence and expecting anything other than drubbings like last night. Their recently added replacements/competition don’t appear to be any better, albeit early days for both Valle and Trusty.

For the avoidance of doubt, I don’t expect us to actually compete in the CL, but we really shouldn’t be as embarrassingly easy to beat as this, year after year. We’re “learning” feck all.

posted on 2/10/24

i dont think we should be competing at this level, i do think we should setup away from home to be difficult to beat.

that left side is a massive problem, what taylor does is fine in scotland where you can get away with it, but in europe it means the LCB has to cover his position and our CDM isn't good enough defensively to drop in.

No argument with that though the 4-1-4-1 that looked like a 2-1-4-3 because the FBs had pushed too high meant that McGregor was treading water and he's not the best defensively in the first place.

So long as we win the league I'm not sure the board will care but they are the only ones that will change it. They will have listened to Ange and BR prior to hiring and be supportive of the philosophy but if the reality is they miss out on the playoff places and the extra £10m (I'm guessing) through GD then that might change though only if domestic dominance is at risk would be my further guess?

We'd still have lost sitting in. Scales was actually one of our better performers. BD are fast as fvck, powerful, bigger and sliced through us like a hot knife & butter. I still say CCV prevents 2 or 3 of them.

posted on 2/10/24

i would never drop mcgregor from these games, but i think we need a solid CDM of the wanyama type in there for europe.

it starts with taylor leaving scales stranded and then scales pushing high, mcgregor comes in and nobody covers his area.

i think scales defensive battles were fine, but his positioning off the ball and his eagerness to press leaves us really exposed.

posted on 2/10/24

We were never coming anywhere close to that side last night even with a different line up and CCV available. We might have lost by less, but we’d still have lost. I said a minimum 2 goal defeat before CCV was ruled out.

We’ve spent a decent amount of money this season on new contracts and new players so I fully understand the board not willing to sanction £30-40m more and maybe get a bit higher up that table. Absolutely no guarantees we would anyway.

Still think we’ll get through to next stage but that’ll be it. And if as expected we clean up domestically and qualify again next year while maybe again profiting from player sales; then it’ll be seen as a great job done.

spot on mate.

i'd be ok with losing by less tbh. These results stand out and not in a good way.

we need to setup away from home to be difficult to breakdown. It took dortmund maybe 2 or 3 passes to easily cut through us last night.

we deserve a beating like that for purely for the tactical arrogance of it.

The commentating on Celtic TV had me wondering what was going on at times, as I couldn't see the game. At one point we took the kick-off after losing a goal, next comment was the ball at BD player halfway in his own half, next pass they were in our box. Was thinking, how the feck?

Unfortunately for you, Celtic did claim a bit of a record last night last night

Celtic are the first British team to concede five goals in the first half of a game in major European competition since Cwmbran Town against Progresul Bucharest in the 1997-98 UEFA Cup Winner's Cup

Well done 👍
