Are you still in BC?
If so what do you think of the Squamish housing project in downtown Vancouver?

I'm on the island so don't really know anything about it tbf. The little I have learned about First Nations relations in my time here is that it's often ignorant and harmful to suggest we know what's best, or that a 'best' to address the many different issues and groups involved even exists.

Tldr: chit's complex

Burma/Myanmar was a British colony that's now under a brutal dictatorship.

How much should we be sending to the junta there?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Who knows.

Colonial rule fundamentally alters a country, its people, and its politics. In the case of Kashmir, Lord Mountbatten's partition has played a key role in the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan. Before colonial rule, Muslims, Hindus, and Sikhs lived peacefully together in the same landmass.

Wonder how much the Muslim world pays in reparations given the absolutely huge number of slaves processed?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've visited Stonetown Cathedral in Zanzibar.

The British defeated the Arab slave traders, released the slaves, built a cathedral on the site of the now defunct slave market and made sure the altar was on the same spot as where the Whipping Post was.

All that was over a century ago but it was a proactive way of making ammends in some small way.

Yeah. How many First Nations?
Just thought you'd know a bit about this thing.
Saw a report on CBC last night. And thought it tied in with your view on monies. I find the West Coast Nations really have their schit together. And I believe most of them don't have treaties. Could be wrong there tho.

Yeah that's right, no treaties signed in BC. That's why the land acknowledgment is a thing here where it's not in other provinces so much.

I don't really watch the news much as I can't vote yet but should be sometime early next year!

Slavery, regardless of who perpetrates it, is highly abhorrent. Throughout various periods of the Islamic empires, particularly the Ottoman and Mughal Empires, slavery was a significant feature; in fact, Islamic law permits the capture of enemies as slaves. It's important to note that slavery was not exclusive to Western civilisation. While the British defeated Arab slave traders, this does not absolve them of their participation in the slave trade.

ALL participants in the slave trade should acknowledge their role and seek to repair the historical damage.

only in parts of Africa today is there still slavery

all participants in the historical slave trade died centuries ago

what are they meant to repair, they're dead

nobody blames modern day Germans born after WWII for the things that happened in that war, which is only a few generations back

how can you expect people living now to have some sort of guilt or responsibility for things that happened centuries ago

If the U.K, US and Germany paid reparations for all their misdoings over the last century, they would be a 4th world country and a new word would have to be created to describe their overwhelming debts.

The responsibility for past social and economic inequalities rests with the descendants; that's how reparations work. Whether we like it or not, the billions or trillions gained from the trade continue to benefit our society today.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Definitely, it's the modern scourge.

In India, society is stratified along religious and caste lines, which creates deep inequalities. Depending on one’s caste, job opportunities can be severely restricted, those from lower castes are often limited to menial work, like serving as domestic workers. This inequality leads to abuse, including trafficking, which is especially evident in countries with high levels of poverty.
